Toronto’s Good Group Thanks for Coming Juxtaposes Upbeat Indie Rock with an Onslaught of Life Problems on “La Da Da Yeah”
Toronto’s Good Group Thanks for Coming is a band made up of a group of friends who are each from different musical backgrounds. They combine their talents to create all of your favourite music simmered in an indie rock rue and served on a platter from your local dive bar.
The band’s new single, “La Da Da Yeah,” is an upbeat and thundering alt/indie rock song that is about smiling through life’s problems while you willfully ignore them. Shifting from aggression into glittering indie rock, Good Group Thanks for Coming leans into the frustration, sarcasm, and duality of this song’s themes.
Band member Emily Morse explains that “La Da Da Yeah” is,
“ultimately, a song about saying ‘fuck it.’ I wrote it at a time where there was a lot going wrong in my life that I felt powerless to change. The song sounds upbeat but it’s also a list of terribly hurtful things and the more hurtful things I list, the more upbeat the song gets. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. I wrote this song, not just as my own outlet, but so that we can all commiserate together.”
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey, you! We’re Good Group Thanks for Coming! We’re a Toronto-based band that wants to make something fresh, play a good show, and have a little fun along the way! Our goal is to take all of the music that we love and blend it together into something new. It’s a music of everything, lovingly curated by us to share with everyone. We make musical sandwiches, music soup, music pizza; all your favourite music simmered in an indie rock rue and served on a platter from your local dive bar.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
La Da Da Yeah is a song about smiling through problems that you know you’re, ultimately, powerless to change. The song starts off sounding a little aggressive and bare-bones. It then gradually develops into something almost bubble-gummy with lots of layers and a very full texture. Lyrically, each new verse introduces a series of frustrating or hurtful things. The more the song goes on, and the more frustrating things the song lists off, the more glittery the music becomes in juxtaposition. It’s intended to feel empowering in a “we’ll all commiserate together” sort of way.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
Collaboration is an important part of songwriting for us. When one person has a good idea for a song they’ll sit down and make a little demo for the rest of the group to listen to. If the group feels excited about the song we’ll bring it to rehearsal and work on it together. It’s important to us that each member is able to leave their mark on a song and we work towards having each Good Group Thanks for Coming song be greater than the sum of its parts.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
La Da Da Yeah is the second of three songs that we’re releasing as a part of our “Chimera Series”; a series of three singles that make up our first recording endeavour. You can hear Take Me Down to the Apricorns, our first release, on streaming platforms now. Follow our socials for more news on the upcoming release of It’s a Game, the final single of our Chimera Series, too! If you live in Toronto, you can see us live at the Dakota Tavern on September 7th (we’d love to have you).
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
Playing our first couple of shows as a band was huge for us. Three of our five members originally studied classical music and, although we love rock and pop, we weren’t really sure how everything was going to work out at first. Luckily, it all worked out really well! We fell in love and the love flows deep. After we built a little momentum off the back of those initial shows, we knew Good Group Thanks for Coming was here to stay.
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
We have so many great band friends! Check out Mandatory Overtime (IG @mandatoryovertime.to) for powerhouse pop punk, Heartrunner (IG @heartrunnerband) for a group of indie sweethearts with some bite, High Tea (IG @the.highest.of.tea) for progressive rock you can bang your head to and Shaylynn Anderson (IG @shaylynn.anderson) for some heart-felt folk with inflections of jazz.
