COUNTDOWN TO STAN ROGERS FOLK FESTIVAL – INTERVIEW WITH DAVE GUNNING

Dave Gunning, a celebrated Canadian folk musician, has earned ten East Coast Music Awards, two Canadian Folk Music Awards, and a Juno nomination. Known for his poignant storytelling and activism, Gunning’s music, including his most recent release The Same Storm, continues to captivate audiences with heartfelt and socially conscious themes.

Dave is set to play Stanfest in Canso, NS, throughout the weekend of July 25-28.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Dave Gunning and I’m a singer-songwriter.

What does it mean to you to perform at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, a festival known for its dedication to celebrating songwriters?

The festival is an important one for me. I have played every Stan Fest since the late nineties, almost since it started and over the years it has become my home festival.

As part of a festival that honors the legacy of Stan Rogers, how do you incorporate storytelling into your performances to connect with the audience on a deeper level?

I’m a songwriter and storyteller so the suit fits perfectly.

Stanfest is known for its intimate and community-oriented atmosphere. How does performing in such a setting differ from larger venues or other festivals you’ve played at?

As a folksinger and songwriter, I find myself at many similar festivals and concerts but this one is extra special because of the legacy of Stan’s music. In addition, my very first live concert experience was a show where John Allan Cameron, Catherine MacKinnon and Stan Roger all performed. Stan was on first that night so what a way for me to be introduced to the real deal.

What new projects or upcoming releases are you working on, and will Stanfest attendees get a preview of any new material during your set?

It’s possible that I might have a few new songs to play. I’m always writing and recording although it’s been a little while because I’ve been helping others with their albums over the last few months. Stan Fest certainly has become a place where I’m comfortable enough to try almost anything and I’m looking forward to getting back at writing and working on new material.

The festival is kicking off with “The Circle Continues – Stanfest Celebrates Bruce Guthro.” What’s your favourite song by Bruce?

Bruce wrote so many great songs and I can’t really pick just one. He would often introduce new songs at his song circle shows and they were always special. I just loved him and everything he had to say. He could always hit you directly in the heart and I also loved his comedic songs as well. I may play one of his funny ones at the tribute show.

Collaboration is a big part of the folk music tradition. Are there any artists on this year’s lineup that you’re particularly excited to collaborate with or watch perform?

There are two new performers coming to the festival this year; Rose Morrison and Dane Pedersen. I’m really looking forward to seeing both of them perform. I have collaborated with Rose and I’ve met Dane and I’m looking forward to working with him as well sometime.
