Calgary & Toronto-based solo artist Ali Wick releases new single, “Easy It’s Smooth”
Ali Wick, one of Canada’s most refreshing young new artists and songwriters, steps out with her third single from the upcoming sophomore EP, Hey, It’s Me. The new single, ‘Easy It’s Smooth’ was released on Friday, June 7, 2024.
Ali Wick is an artist “for the girls” with most of her growing catalog being about self-love and empowerment… but she really finds her people with women in their 20s & 30s who struggle to balance capitalism with their dreams, and have swiped through dating apps ad nauseum. Women with a few negative experiences behind them but optimism to spare, just like Ali. She writes singalong hooks like Meghan Trainor with the quirks of Regina Spektor, the production and arrangements of Lily Allen, and the soul of Amy Winehouse.
Recorded in Nashville with famed Producer Asher Condit, the collection of pop/soul songs on the upcoming EP feels like a night at home catching up with an old friend because each is an intimate story, fear, or celebration that Ali has shared with her own girlfriends this year. They are the stories of modern women working actively to balance independence with romance.
“Easy It’s Smooth” is a high-energy sing-along pop-soul tune about a mythical world in which dating apps work for everyone! The song is perfectly written and Produced for the Summer and will fit perfectly on a hot evening, a weekend drive, or a pre-date bop to set the mood for the next night out.
Review
Ali Wick’s new song “Easy it’s Smooth” is a soulful pop delight, blending catchy melodies with upbeat energy. It starts with clever lyrics about a surprising blind date, setting a playful tone that explores new connections effortlessly.
Right from the start, Wick’s vocals draw you in with their inviting tone and smooth delivery, perfectly matching the song’s lively rhythm and cheerful instrumentation. The chorus hooks you with its easy comparisons—“like coffee and a Jack Johnson tune” or “lemonade in the afternoon”—bringing a comforting familiarity that runs through the whole track.
In all, Ali Wick shines with her ability to create music that’s relatable and uplifting, making you tap your feet and smile along to its infectious melodies.
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey! I’m Ali – from Calgary/Toronto and most of my music is “for the girls”, about self-love and empowerment. Before leaving it allllll behind for music, I lived in South America, played on the Canadian National Rugby Team, and left a Warner Music Group tech job… a hard pivot, let’s see if it pays off.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
Dating apps work so well for some – but for others (like me), they’ve made dating into a cost-benefit analysis where the potential of love doesn’t seem worth the effort of putting on lipstick. This song is about… what if dating apps actually went well? My brother (country artist Connor Wicklum) helped me write it.
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
Step 1: Make weird decisions, have a slightly obsessive and impulsive personality. Step 2: Use said obsessive personality to write 100 songs about said weird decisions. Step 3: My brother Connor Wicklum (country artist) helps make a few of them into bangers. Up next: COLLABS.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
This is part of a 6-song EP coming out in Fall 2024 so much more to come! We’re touring Alberta and BC in the summer (peek at Instagram for dates), making 2 music videos, and facing existential dread throughout.
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
My TSN turning point is yet to come but I have a feeling it will have to do with a bunch of collabs/duets I have coming down the pipe with phenomenally talented folks.
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
I truly have innumerable talented pals but CONNOR WICKLUM (country but make it great), RED FARROW (electronic hotboi), BROOKE STILLA (pop princess), KIBRA (rnb from heaven).
