First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Kazdoura is a band based in Toronto. It was founded by Leen and Johnny in 2020. Kazdoura presents a modern Arabic fusion sound incorporating elements from Western music such as Soul, funk, and Jazz.

What does it mean to you to perform at the Stan Rogers Folk Festival, a festival known for its dedication to celebrating songwriters?

It means a lot to be performing at a big festival like Stan Rogers. We are so grateful to be recognized by the festival bookers. Especially since Leen sings in Arabic and our music is Arabic. it is a blessing to be able to share our music and culture with the festival audience.

As part of a festival that honors the legacy of Stan Rogers, how do you incorporate storytelling into your performances to connect with the audience on a deeper level?

Narrative is integral to our performances, particularly within the context of presenting a new genre and singing in Arabic. We prioritize sharing our personal narratives and sources of inspiration. Additionally, we delve into the meanings behind our lyrics and songs, providing insight into the stories they convey. This approach not only connects us more deeply with the audience but also serves to educate them about Arabic music and culture.

Stanfest is known for its intimate and community-oriented atmosphere. How does performing in such a setting differ from larger venues or other festivals you’ve played at?

Our performances typically revolve around fostering a sense of community. In such an atmosphere, there’s a unique opportunity to cultivate deeper connections with the audience. Engaging closely with individuals allows us to witness their immediate reactions to the music and engage in genuine conversations. Ultimately, the essence of music is to establish authentic and spontaneous connections with the audience, and this intimate setting enables just that.

What new projects or upcoming releases are you working on, and will Stanfest attendees get a preview of any new material during your set?

We are working on our full album. We are releasing a few singles this fall. We will be playing 2 new unreleased songs from the new album.

The festival is kicking off with “The Circle Continues – Stanfest Celebrates Bruce Guthro.” What’s your favourite song by Bruce?

We like “Every River.”

Collaboration is a big part of the folk music tradition. Are there any artists on this year’s lineup that you’re particularly excited to collaborate with or watch perform?

I am excited to meet many artists and watch them perform. I would like to watch Matt Andersen and Kim Dunn.
