Examining the looming impacts of desertification in the Canadian prairies, and directing cutting sarcasm at the comfortable middle/upper class who willfully ignore the coming calamity, the song is a jolly Trojan Horse carrying a dire message. In a political milieu that is fixated on carbon reductionism and propping up the status quo, Davis hopes for the song to give voice to the frustrations of an ecologically conscious generation, who may yet discover their power for transformation.
