Tyler Ellis – Greater-Than (Live) (Album Review)

Artist; Tyler Ellis
Album: Greater-Than (Live)
Release Date: June 21, 2024
Genre: Folk-Roots

Toronto singer-songwriter Tyler Ellis is one of the unsung heroes of folk-roots music on the scene, but his peculiar poetry brilliantly shines in this apropos LIVE album GREATER-THAN, recorded at the ever-popular, intimate Free Times Café in downtown Toronto. Ellis’ seventh album to date, Greater-Than is dedicated to his father who passed away in December of last year.

Opening the album, “Here Hear” is a heartfelt folk song that creates a reflective atmosphere for listeners. Its soothing melody and earnest vocals convey a sincere plea amidst a bustling crowd. The repeated refrain, “could you be a dear, and let the people here hear,” gently calls attention to the conversations swirling around, underscoring the desire for connection and acknowledgment. The song’s simplicity and authenticity serve as a touching reminder of the importance of genuine communication and listening in a busy world.

“Campfire Song” paints a vivid picture of a magical evening under starlit skies, with the comforting glow of a crackling fire and the gentle strumming of guitars creating an unforgettable atmosphere. The song’s reassuring refrain, “you can’t go wrong with a campfire song,” highlights the joy and camaraderie found in music shared amidst nature’s embrace. Its serene melody and uplifting lyrics make “Campfire Song” a heartfelt tribute to the power of music to bring people together and lift spirits, perfect for creating cherished memories on cozy evenings with friends

“‘Do It Up Right’ is a nostalgic journey down memory lane, wrapped in a catchy, upbeat melody that resonates with warmth and sentimentality. The song opens with a scene set in a garage, where the discovery of a dusty box triggers a flood of reminiscences about a past love. The lyrics vividly evoke the innocence and passion of youth, reminiscing about “bygone days” and the magic of a “fairy tale romance.” The chorus, with its infectious repetition of ‘we do it up right,’ celebrates the depth of their love and the highs of their shared experiences.

Overall, Greater-Than captures the essence of nostalgic and folk-inspired storytelling, weaving together heartfelt narratives with evocative melodies that transport listeners to introspective and reflective spaces.
