SUNNSETTER Release “Aching Alt-Rock Anthem’ With New Single, “Try Again”
Sunnsetter, the music project of accomplished and prolific multi-instrumentalist, composer, and mixing engineer, Andrew McLeod releases a new single, “Try Again.”
This new single follows the April 2024 single, a reboot of their 2018 song “I ACTUALLY DON’T WANNA DIE” which originally appeared on their Worrybody release. It was re-worked via a newly assembled Sunnsetter band who took the song sonically, to a new space more in line with Andrew’s overall musical vision.
“I’ve played in metal bands, sludgey bands, noise rock bands but when it comes to recording I’ve always fallen back on self-producing and writing things that made sense within the context of a singular individual multi-tracking and recording it all myself. Which by the very nature of it makes the idea of creating something that sound like a band playing a song difficult to do. There is a catharsis that comes from playing heavy music that I find myself pining after, since starting to play live as a band. The feeling of letting go and yelling and carrying on in front of people in a room is something that really drives me.”
“Try Again” is bookended (initially) by a strummed acoustic guitar, and a soft, almost secretive, whispered vocal line, as a hazy-droning undertone bubbles up underneath. Andrew empathetically examines the overload we can all be subject to. The various forces at work can make anyone feel worthless. The feedback that’s always waiting around the corner, telling us that the path we’re on, and the dreams we hold, are alluding us and ultimately out of our reach.
“The only way to get anywhere is to try again,” says Andrew. “I have to tell myself this over and over.”
Last year Sunnsetter released, The best that I can be. (their debut album with Paper Bag Records). Sunnsetter’s current musical mindset: a masterful collision of soft and loud, and genre meshing that both whiplash the listener and sonically appeases the soul with the melodic dexterity they manage to achieve within a tidal wave of sound.
From last year to now, Sunnsetter has turned into a fully staffed band supporting McLeod which includes: Cole Sefton (guitar), Hannah Edgerton (bass/vocals), Trevor Cooke (drums), and Kyle Gottschalk (keyboards).
“The last year and a half has been wonderful, we have journeyed and grown as a group of people, and as a band,” says Andrew. “Having these people around to turn this dream into a reality has been an incredible experience. We all love to play music and we all have a similar outlook on how this can work.”
Sunnsetter works primarily from their idyllic home studio in rural Norfolk County. Andrew is also a collaborator with and contributor to three-time Polaris nominated/ twice shortlisted, Juno nominated ZOON, the solo music project of Daniel Monkman, and 2023 Juno nominees, OMBIIGIZI.
