Last night, American rock band Styx played a packed Place Bell! New Brunswick’s David Myles opened the evening, showing off his guitar skills, great energy and chatting with the audience in French!

Shortly before 8.30pm, a large Styx logo adorned the stage, and the band walked onstage to a thunder of applause, before kicking things off with The Grand Illusion. With bands who have been around for many decades, there’s often a question mark around how they’ve aged as performers, with shows sometimes feeling like a parody of their former selves. This was absolutely not the case for Styx, who provided an extremely solid show! The music was impeccable, the vocals still on an elite level (if anything, Tommy Shaw’s voice feels stronger than ever, same for Lawrence Gowan’s), and the energy levels made them seem half their age! The audience delighted in their prog rock hits, with the vibes hitting an all-time high on closing tracks Mr. Roboto and Renegade. A true masterclass of how it’s done, from a band who’s now been around for half a century!!

Styx will be playing several dates in Quebec this week, and will be at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on June 14th. For tickets and more info, visit Styx’s website.
