Afropolitan Nomad Festival

Afropolitan Nomad Festival will be in Montreal from May 27 to June 1st

The Afropolitan Nomad Festival, a flagship event celebrating cultural and artistic diversity, announces its 10th edition, which will take place from May 27th to June 1st, 2024 in Montreal. Under the theme “From Roots to Life, From Wings to Spirit: Redefining the Boundaries of Creativity,” the event celebrates culture, art, and music.

Since its inception in 2012, the Afropolitan Nomadic Festival has been committed to promoting the richness of Canadian, European, and African artists, with a particular focus on decolonization through the arts. Establishing a dynamic bridge between continents, the festival fosters cultural and artistic exchanges.

After traveling through a dozen countries in Central and West Africa over the past decade, the festival will take place for the first time in the heart of Montreal. The goal is to promote exchange and collaboration between Canadian artisans from Black and Indigenous communities and their colleagues from the African continent.

Over the years, the Afropolitan Nomadic Festival has become a multidisciplinary event incorporating, among other things, music, visual arts, culinary arts, and dance.

The opening concert on May 31st will bring together artists who have already made their mark on the Festival over the past decade with performers new to the festival. Among the artists featured in this edition are the French Afro-punk duo GKBL the versatile Franco-Cameroonian artist Bo* The Qu-inG, and the unique Fredy Massamba.

An exhibition of visual arts will be held as part of the festival and will feature an installation, as well as collective works created by artists Kando (Canada), Guy Kouekam (Cameroon), and Fred Ebami (France).

The talented dancer from Cameroon Mario Pounde, will invite the public to discover his rich cultural heritage through movement, offering an immersive experience to a diverse audience.

This year’s festival will highlight gender equality in its programming, staffing, and professionalization activities. Focused on female leadership through the arts, the festival has implemented a program aimed at promoting equality and supporting the professionalization of African women in the cultural and creative industries.

True to its mission of inclusion, the Afropolitan Nomadic Festival offers spaces for artistic expression through accessible and inclusive creation residencies. These initiatives aim to provide women and cultural and gender minorities with equal access to artistic development opportunities.
