Justine Blanchet – “First Love” (Single Review)

JUSTINE BLANCHET’S NEWEST MADE-IN NASHVILLE COUNTRY SINGLE CAPTURES THE EMOTIONS OF LOVING SOMEONE AND NEVER BEING THEIR “FIRST LOVE”

Canadian country artist Justine Blanchet is celebrating her current single, “First Love” on all digital streaming platforms, and the recently released live piano rendition on YouTube.

Written by Emma-Lee, Blake Bollinger, and Claire Wright, “First Love” was produced in Nashville by Grammy-nominated Danick Dupelle (Tebey, Tyler Joe Miller, Matt Lang). Produced as a clear vocally-driven country song with added pop influences, “First Love” also features vocals provided by another Music City-based Canadian, Ben Chase. It is the first offering of new music from Blanchet since her debut EP, “Don’t Ask Me to Dance” was released in 2023.

In speaking about “First Love”, she says,

“I was drawn to record this song because it’s more emotional than the title might suggest. It’s really about the longing, sadness, and doubt that can arise from loving your significant other but knowing you aren’t their first love. It was relatable to me because I think there’s something very precious about being someone’s first love.”

Review

In “First Love,” Justine delves into the complexities of love, expressing a heartfelt desire to fill the void left by a past relationship. Through honest lyrics and emotive vocals, she paints a vivid picture of insecurity and longing, capturing the essence of seeking a deeper connection.

Blanchet navigates the complexities of comparing herself to a former flame, delving into intimate moments such as dancing in the kitchen while wrestling with feelings of doubt and fear. Her repeated longing to be “the last” and “the best” emphasizes the depth of her desire. As she sings, “Am I sleeping on her side of the bed,” Blanchet bravely confronts her own jealousy and acknowledges the heartache of never having been the first love.

Overall, “First Love” is a powerful ballad that captures the complexities of love and insecurity.
