Adrian Sutherland releases video for “My Rebel Spirit”

GUEST APPEARANCE BY LEGENDARY MUSICIAN, MICKEY RAPHAEL

Northern Canadian roots-rock singer-songwriter, Adrian Sutherland, releases a mesmerizing video for his song, “My Rebel Spirit,” from his recently released sophomore album, Precious Diamonds. The song, strong in both melody and message, stems from Sutherland’s self-discovery and journey towards a self-proclamation about staying true to yourself. This message of the song is captured perfectly in the music video, through the journey of a musician (played by actor Jordan Talledo) searching for someplace he belongs. With ‘magical appearances’ by legendary harmonica player Mickey Raphael helping to guide the young man’s way, the story is about having a dream and finding the inspiration to pursue it.

I’ve felt like an outsider at different times in my life, and the spirit in me has always been slightly rebellious,” says Sutherland. “I’ve come to realize that being a rebel or an outsider is not such a bad thing. Just stay true to yourself, and you’ll stay on the right path.”

The music video was created by FRANK DIGITAL in Winnipeg, whose team came up with the storyline, filmed the footage over two days, and completed the editing and animation.

Says video director and FRANK Digital’s CEO, Chris McIvor:

It was such a pleasure working with Adrian on this video. His passion for his music and the stories told through it are so compelling. I hope the video even remotely captures the essence of Adrian’s powerful lyrics.

“My Rebel Spirit” is one of 10 tracks on Sutherland’s sophomore album, Precious Diamonds. Produced and recorded in Nashville by Colin Linden, the album was released on March 15, 2024, with contributions from legendary musicians including Mickey Raphael, Jim Hoke, Jeff Taylor, Gary Craig, John Dymond, Janice Powers, and Linden himself. The album includes two all-Cree songs, Notawe (Father) and Kiyash (Before), making the first time that Adrian is recording vocals in his mother tongue.

Sutherland returns to southern Ontario in June to perform June 8 at Springtide Music Festival in Uxbridge and other initiatives (to be announced) during National Indigenous History Month.
