Päter – Five Questions With

PÄTER Releases Debut LP, 4-7 Company

Päter has unveiled their debut LP, 4-7 Company, a journey through the solitary hours between 4-7 PM.

Päter says,

“Two years I flew out to Nanaimo, BC to record my first LP with Howard Redekopp + a small team of incredible musicians. It has been a labour of love to prepare it for you and I’m so excited to finally share it today. It’s Called 4-7 Company (four to seven company) and it’s about the solitary hours between 4-7PM, as day turns into night, when you’re alone with your thoughts and anything can happen. It’s an album about cycles, self, and the critters inside. Who are you when you’re alone?”

In 2020, Parmida transformed into Päter with the hit single “Dam, Damn,” garnering 2.4M streams. Päter’s sonic universe, influenced by The Strokes and Kate Bush, weaves a unique tapestry between Muse and Hillary Duff.

Their debut LP 4-7 Company delves into twilight hours, exploring solitude’s introspective depths. Co-produced by Howard Redekopp, known for his work with Mother Mother, the album’s intimacy is enhanced by a vintage piano’s warm tones.

Join Päter at The Monarch Tavern in Toronto on April 11th for an album release show! Tickets are available here.

Plus, catch them at CMW 2024 in Toronto and on their upcoming tour across Canada and the US!

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m Parmida! I go by Päter (rhymes with later) as a musician.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

4-7 Company is my first full-length project! It’s a concept album about the hours between four to seven pm, theoretically after work and before going out, when you’re alone with your thoughts and begin to spiral inward. It’s a lot about mental health, cycles, and relationship with self. I got to co-produce it with Howard Redekopp who’s made some of my favorite records. There’s a lot of genre blending in there but it lives in the Alternative Pop/Rock realm.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

Usually, it starts with a really strong feeling, or an idea that I feel is clever. Most songs come from one of those two places. When it’s a feeling, I’ll sit with it and try to pull some imagery that feels true to the experience and go from there. But when it’s an idea like with Dam, Damn a lyric and melody will come to mind (like “all my demons stuck behind a dam, damn”) and I’ll extrapolate from there.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

There’s a solid collection of music videos we made to go along with 4-7 Company and I still have more that I want to make. One of them – Nicotine Hallelujah – got into two film festivals, which was super cool! Definitely check those out on YouTube. The LP is available on vinyl and it’s truly the best way to experience the album. We’re also currently planning a tour so follow me on IG to keep up with dates!

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

Deciding to take on the name Päter and create this other world for my music was the most liberating thing I’ve done. It helped me let go of so many limiting preconceived ideas about how I need to be as an artist, especially ideas around gender. I think that giving myself permission to make my own path sets a lot of good things into motion.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend

I actually just saw a Toronto band play that I hadn’t heard before and was super impressed! Nick Posthumus & The Soft Maybes. Super sweet tunes & guys.
