GILLIAN HAY RELEASES DEBUT EP MAGNOLIA BABY CELEBRATES WITH TORONTO SHOW ON APRIL 26TH AT THE PAINTED LADY. SHARES NEW SINGLE “THINGS ARE GONNA GET BETTER”
Toronto-based and self-defined Twang Pop artist Gillian Hay reveals her debut album, Magnolia Baby, and shares the new single “Things Are Gonna Get Better.”
“I wanted this EP to feel like springtime when the flowers are blooming, and everyone is sitting on patios and smiling and there are trees blooming everywhere,” shares Gillian. “I wanted it to show my love for my friends and my family, flowers, babies, and everything else that makes me who I am.”
Tickets are going fast for her upcoming Toronto album release show at The Painted Lady on April 26th. Tickets are available HERE.
The debut EP features 6 original songs, including the previously released singles “Apartment” and “Reminders of You”. The album showcases Gavin Gardiner (from The Wooden Sky) and her brother Dylan Cantlon Hay alternating/sharing roles as producer. The album was mixed by Will Maclellan at Sound City Studios (Phoebe Bridgers) and mastered by Noah Mintz (Arkells).
With her debut EP, Gillian wanted to share her heartbreak through songs of sadness and anger and everything in between.
“I hope you picture galloping through a sunflower field or lounging under a willow tree reading your favourite novel, or screaming at the top of your lungs when the breakup songs make you relive your heartbreaks,” says Gillian.
Much of the album was captured at Gavin Gardiner’s studio, All Day Coconut Studios. Along with Gavin (Mellotron, Bass) and her brother Dylan Cantlon Hay (multi-instruments) joining in on various songs, the recording process included a collective of talented musicians such as Justin Bell (Guitar, Drums), Devon Cole (Background Vocals), Aaron Goldstein (Pedal Steel), and Graham McLaughlin (Violin).
Gillian shares about the album single/closer,
“Things Are Gonna Get Better is a simple, gentle reminder that it’ll be okay. I wrote this song for one of my closest friends when she was feeling down, I could so relate to the way she was feeling & wanted her to know I understood and cared.” She continues, “Although I wrote it for a specific friend of mine, it is really for all my friends and family and anyone who needs a reminder that things will ultimately get better. This much I know is true.”
The new album is a must-list for fans of Kacey Musgraves, Lucinda Williams, and Phoebe Bridgers. The new music has received love from Exclaim, Billboard Canada, Canadian Beats, CBC Radio One, CFMU “I Heart Hamilton,” Dominionated’s “Torch & Twang”, Erin Radio, The Alt Nation, and more.
