First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Hey everyone! My name is Darrian Gerard, I’m an independent songwriter, singer, producer, and artist from BC, Canada. I’m super big on loud choruses, catchy melodies, and bringing you back to the early 2000s with my music.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Villain will be my first release since my debut EP came out last year, so it’s super special to me. Villain is about feeling like you have to be the “bad guy” in order to get further in life. I found myself saying yes to things I didn’t want to do to please others, and no to the things I actually wanted to do. This song was kind of the pivotal turning point for me to kind of say it out loud that I wasn’t going to do things just for the pleasure of others anymore, but I kind of felt like the villain of the story for doing so. If you have ever watched a TV show, there are sometimes people at the beginning of the season who you hate because they’re selfish, narcissistic, and are always doing what they want no matter who it affects. By the end of the season, they’re your favourite character because of these exact tendencies, you just got to know them better. This is exactly how I felt in the moment when writing this song, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did making it.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

90% of the time, my songwriting process starts with a single lyric or idea, then I bring my guitar in and try to write the whole thing in one sitting. Sometimes I just get a verse and a chorus, and then the next day I pick it back up and finish it. With Villain, I had a sort of jumpy, crisp guitar riff in my head (which you hear at the beginning of the song), and recently I had been feeling like the villain for being selfish and only doing the things I wanted to in that moment in order to try and further my music career. It kind of had me go down a whole rabbit hole of why I was feeling like the villain for doing things for myself for once, and then voila! Villain was written in a day haha.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

I have sooooo many fun things planned for this year to help Villain get heard! Some I can and can’t announce yet haha. But for the ones I can, I was invited back to play at Laketown Shakedown Festival in BC this year which is such an honour, I can’t wait to play Villain for the crowd this year, it’s going to be so fun. I also have a music video for Villain that I’m currently editing as we speak! I know you’re going to love it!! As for the rest… you’re just going to have to wait to find out!

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

100000% a turning point in my career happened last year at the festival I’m also playing at this year, Laketown Shakedown. I applied to play but didn’t get a callback, but then they released a contest where if you get the most votes on your video, you get to play on the Main Stage that year. During this time, I was just about to move away from Canada and drop everything I knew to go and pursue music and try and make it. I was feeling down in the dumps with everything, that I wasn’t moving fast enough, and didn’t have enough time to fully engage myself in making it as an artist. Long story short, I ended up winning the contest!! After playing the show, the opportunities came flying through the door for me. I got even more shows booked, got one of my songs put on commercial radio (which is still spinning!), and so many more. So many more opportunities that I forgot about moving away and figured out a way to continue furthering my music career while still staying in Canada for the time being.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

Okay, I’m going to give you a few. If you like my music, you will 100% like music from Peyton Marie, Wet Future, and Emi Jeen. And if you’re feeling a little country, my fav country artist right now is Jaimey Hamilton!
