First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

My name is Stephanie Nhan. I’m a music educator and I make fun, meaningful, multi-genre music for kids under the artist name Beppie. I’ve released five albums so far receiving two JUNO nominations and a Western Canadian Music Award along the way. My 6th album, Reset, is dropping on April 12th.

You’ve unveiled your new single, “Reset.” Can you tell us a bit about the inspiration behind this song and what listeners can expect from it?

“Reset” is my way of communicating to kids that it’s totally normal to get stuck, feel low, and struggle from time to time. I’ve coached my own kids and music students through tough moments on countless occasions and I wanted to use music to share those relatable feelings and talk about the power of positivity. The main goal was to empower listeners to step away from the task, moment, or barrier and reset. It’s an upbeat rock anthem that parents and kids can use as a soundtrack in those tough moments.

With its catchy melody and versatile production, “Reset” is said to tap into multiple genres. How did you approach blending these different musical elements, and what effect do you hope this diversity has on the overall listening experience?

Using diverse musical styles and genres has given my producer and I an effective way to capture emotions and elevate our storytelling abilities. Being able to navigate the spectrum of musical genres from one end to the other lets us match the personality of each song with a customized vibe. Doing this not only turns our album into an adventure for your ears, but it makes the creation process fun and challenging for us as well.

As an educator in addition to being a musician, how does your background in education inform your approach to creating music for children? Are there specific educational principles or values that you aim to incorporate into your songs?

I’m always thinking about how my music can be used in the classroom. When I first started making children’s music, it was because I wanted to use the music in an early childhood music curriculum that I was developing. Every song was created with the intent of teaching or reinforcing a foundational musical element. The new album is full of music that can be worked into music classrooms. I consult with music educators and other music creators as I create new material and many of my songs are incorporated as Orff arrangements, choral pieces, or musical activities.

Your music is known for resonating with both young listeners and parents alike. How do you strike a balance between creating music that appeals to children while also being enjoyable for adults?

The music that my producer and I create is designed for listeners of all ages to enjoy, but the themes and the stories woven in are designed to resonate with younger audiences. Being able to connect with kids through music that their grown-ups also love has been the mission from day one. By taking limits away from the perspective of genre, it’s opened up so many cool possibilities and allowed us to push the boundaries of what kids’ music is supposed to be. We get to write rock songs about space tomatoes and pop songs about dancing dinosaurs. We wrote a heavy metal song about making a stir fry and then on another day wrote a lullaby about a baby robot getting ready for bed. I think that the diverse range of music that we offer to listeners is exciting and inclusive. It’s also been important to keep in mind that we were all kids at one point. So if we succeed at connecting with kids through our themes and stories, there’s a good chance that adults will be able to reflect and connect with the music as well. On top of all of that, we spend a ton of time on production to make sure that the music we release stands up to songs you would hear on the radio.

With the release of your new single “Reset” and the anticipation surrounding your upcoming album, what are your broader goals for your music career in the coming years?

This is going to sound cheesy, but I would just love to keep doing what I’m doing now. I’m interested in continuing to push boundaries, collaborate more on a broader scale, and maybe try out some new styles that I haven’t yet explored, but I feel so fortunate to be where I am. I have a great team, I write super fun and meaningful music, and I love making content for kids. I do have a goal, maybe more of a dream, to rock out on stage with an orchestra and Jack Black… I guess time will tell what the future holds.
