Genre: Indie Rock

Saskatoon-based indie rock band, Close Talker has unveiled their album, The Sprawl.

After a decade of performing and writing together, Close Talker has been an integral aspect of the individual lives of Will, Matthew, and Chris. The project that started as a passion for three friends in 2012 has become formative to their identities. “The Sprawl” accounts for the years 2013-2019 in Close Talker: six years of full-on writing,  recording, touring, rinse, wash, repeat. Those years included incredible highlights and successes, in exchange for burnout and time away from home.

The album features the four previous singles, “Papier-mâché,” “Exodus,” From Dark To Lightness,” and “Tall Boy,” which together garnered over 80K streams on Spotify.

“Papier-mâché” delves into personal growth and relationship complexities, expressing self-doubt and uncertainty. The lyrics depict the narrator’s struggle with progress, comparing it to a fragile papier-mâché house. Lines like “is it enough, the way I’m growing up?” reveal internal conflicts. The chorus yearns for acceptance while fearing inadequacy. The song navigates the tension between individual growth and relationship responsibilities, inviting listeners to reflect on their own experiences.

“Miscue” is an indie rock track that truly comes alive with the addition of dynamic drumming that propels the song forward. “Miscue” delves into introspection and the complexities of relationships with haunting sincerity. The lyrics express a struggle with self-doubt and fear of inadequacy, highlighted by lines like “I am impossible when I’m alone” and “I am the miscue.” The song navigates past experiences and desires for improvement amidst the fear of losing connection with a significant other. Ultimately, “Miscue” offers a deeply evocative exploration of identity and the challenges of self-acceptance.

Closing the album, “Chevy Floor” makes it clear it’s a standout on the album, with its vibrant rhythm. Amidst the introspection, there’s a sense of gratitude woven into the lyrics, a recognition of the privilege and joy that comes with creating and sharing music. As the song progresses, it builds to a euphoric climax, leaving listeners with a sense of exhilaration and appreciation. The repetition of “yeah yeah yeah yeah” throughout the track enhances its rhythmic flow, drawing listeners into the contemplative atmosphere.

Overall, The Sprawl is an awe-inspiring exploration of emotion and artistry, showcasing Close Talker’s incredible growth and resilience as a band. With its captivating blend of heartfelt lyrics and dynamic music, the album leaves a powerful impression, inviting listeners on a captivating journey through sound and emotion.
