The 2024 JUNO Awards were announced in a star-studded weekend in Halifax!
Leading the way with two wins a piece was Montreal pop superstar, Charlotte Cardin, who took home Pop Album of the Year and Album of the Year, Toronto rockers, the Beaches, took home Group of the Year and Rock Album of the Year, and Calgary’s own rising star, Tate McRae, who took home Artist of the Year, and single of the Year. Also celebrating a major win this weekend was Punjabi-Canadian rapper and songwriter, Karan Aujla, who was the voter’s choice for this year’s JUNO Fan Choice. In addition, indigenous artists were well represented in mainstream categories, including Songwriter of the Year for Aysanabee, Blues Album of the Year for Blue Moon Marquee, and Contemporary Roots Album of the Year for William Prince.
Honourees during Sunday’s marquee Juno Awards Broadcast included celebrated sisters in pop, Tegan and Sara, who were honoured with this year’s Humanitarian Award for their fight for health, economic justice and representation for LGBTQ girls and women through the Tegan and Sara Foundation. Additionally, history was made when Maestro Fresh Wes became the first hip-hop artist and rapper to be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. In addition, during the JUNO Opening Night Awards, held on Saturday night, the Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award, which recognizes individuals whose work has significantly impacted the growth and development of the Canadian music industry, was presented to Halifax entertainment lawyer and manager, Chip Sutherland, who was recognized for spearheading the development of the Radio Starmaker Fund and MusiCounts Program, as well as his storied history for managing East Coast heavyweights such as Sloan and the Rankin Family.
Performers for the Juno Awards Broadcast included an exhilarating opening medley by host, Nelly Furtado, an ensemble tribute to Karl Trembley of Les Cowboys Fringants, Gordon Lightfoot and Robbie Robertson by pianist Alexandra Stréliski, winners Aysanabee and William Prince, the Grammy-Award winning, Allison Russell, and Contemporary Roots Album of the Year nominee, Julian Taylor, a powerful performance celebrating indigeneity by Contemporary Indigenous Artist winner, Elisapie, past JUNO winner, Jeremy Dutcher and Mi’kmaq fiddler, Morgan Toney, and a roaring performances by Country Album of the Year nominee, Josh Ross.
With the 2024 JUNO Awards coming to a close, Canadian music fans will now look towards next year’s celebrations in the thriving West Coast cosmopolitan hub of Vancouver; who will play host to the 54th Annual JUNO Awards broadcast on March 30, 2025.
