Yester Daze – Five Questions With

Yester Daze Send Shockwaves With New Pop-Punk Single, “Holy Moly (This Is Who I Am)”

Hailing from Montreal, YESTER DAZE satisfies hungry rock audiences across the globe with their deadly combination of hard-hitting stadium rock and underground punk. Whether they are playing in clubs, bars, near or far, Yester Daze delivers larger-than-life performances, pouring their hearts out and leaving it all on stage with electrifying energy and honest lyricism. Rearing to light it up in 2024, the group announces the release of their sophomore EP, Nothing, Perfectly on May 10th along with a new breakout single and pop-punk anthem, “Holy Moly (This Is Who I Am)”, now streaming everywhere. For fans of Greenday, Billy Talent, Foo Fighters, and Sum 41, its soaring choruses and high-driving guitar work pack some serious heat reminding listeners to never lose sight of who they are for the sake of someone else’s validation.

Holy Moly was written during a time when I wasn’t sure if I wanted out of a relationship I was in. Sometimes you feel like you’re changing and not for the better. The song is about being confident in yourself to take that step forward and do what’s right for you. People don’t always need to change to accommodate others. We should learn how to be comfortable and never lose sight of who we are,” explains vocalist Brandon McShad.

Holy moly refers to our initial feeling when we first wrote the instrumental. We knew we had something and dubbed the demo with that title. It has since stuck and we are confident it will garner the same awestruck reaction from our listeners.

Produced by Matt Nozetz (Avbury Studios) and mixed by Dave Traina (The Damn Truth), Nothing, Perfectly, showcases Yester Daze’s relentless tenacity and signature sound, bridging the gap between heavy riffs and pop melodies. Their lyrics and penchant for creating rock ear-candy combine to form the voice of a generation. A generation who are lost in a sea of greed, wishing and wanting something better. Nothing, Perfectly inspires hope for tomorrow. This unique style permeates across the six-song EP, building and expanding on the musical foundations laid on their debut EP, Yours To Follow (2021) which garnered a treasure trove of national and international recognition across radio platforms and media alike with Soft Sound Press stating, “nothing gets you more excited about a band’s future than realizing they are capable of… literally anything.”

FIRST OFF CARE TO INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO OUR READERS?

My name is Brandon and I’m the frontman of Yester Daze! We are a 4-piece Alternative Rock outfit from Montreal.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR RECENT RELEASE.

“Holy Moly (This Is Who I Am)” is a song that’s quite special to me because it was born from a jam with our drummer Matt Ware and just had something to it that made us go HOLY MOLY. Lyrically it follows where I was at the time with a relationship and thinking about if this was a healthy way forward for either of us.

HOW DO YOU TYPICALLY GO ABOUT THE SONGWRITING PROCESS? DO YOU HAVE A SPECIFIC METHOD OR CREATIVE ROUTINE THAT YOU FOLLOW?

Most of the time, I come up with an idea, whether it’s a 30-second voice memo or something and in most cases a full demo of vocals and guitar. For “Holy Moly” it was instrumental first and just built around a melody I was looping paired with an amp defect. Matt and I kind of looked at each other during the jam and we just knew there was something there.

LOOKING AHEAD, WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR SUPPORTING THIS NEW RELEASE? ARE THERE ANY UPCOMING TOURS, MUSIC VIDEOS, OR ADDITIONAL CONTENT THAT FANS CAN LOOK FORWARD TO IN CONNECTION WITH THIS PROJECT?

We will be opening for Hotel Mira + Fake Shark on Feb. 17th which we are very excited about as it will be our first show of the year. Besides that we have a video coming for Holy Moly as well, shot and edited by us. In terms of content, we’re pretty active on Instagram and TikTok, so give us a follow!

LOOKING BACK ON YOUR MUSICAL CAREER, IS THERE A PARTICULAR MOMENT OR ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT YOU CONSIDER A TURNING POINT OR A HIGHLIGHT?

Still to this day, I’d say headlining El Mocambo in Toronto was wild. Best sounding show we played and one of the funnest as well. But another would definitely be when we played Festival Artefact here with some hometown heroes NOBRO + Les Shirley. Just a fun time and the crowd was amazing.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST, IT’S TIME TO PAY IT FORWARD, WHAT UPCOMING BAND OR ARTIST WOULD YOU RECOMMEND YOUR FANS CHECK OUT?

Ouf that’s a great question. One of the bands that our guitarist Zach and I love is The Dirty Nil, they’re amazing. Locally there’s a band called Old Soul that is just a fun time live. Very 60s/70s. Another is a dear friend from high school who goes by Tatum Quinn. Amazing voice.
