Néhémie Unveils Debut EP, World Of Roses
Emerging Montreal R&B singer-songwriter Néhémie unveils her debut EP World of Roses.
On World of Roses, Néhémie explores the growing pains of learning the true meaning of love. In this project, love takes different forms and is understood in many ways. Love is joy, pain, passion, self-care, and acceptance.
Expanding more on the theme, Néhémie shares,
“Love is who we are. It is found in one’s self first and must transpire in our actions, our ways of being and treating others. One’s growth and journey should allow them to become vessels of love in order to be loved. This is what World of Roses describes.”
Each song represents a different aspect of love: Desire by delving into the anticipation of wanting to be in love; fear by looking at the depth of the attachment implied in a relationship; falling in love with the idea of being loved, falling out of love with the idea of someone loving us as one discovers their own spirit; growing as one learns to love and nourish themselves; learning from one’s mistakes and becoming love.
With the EP released on the day of love, Valentine’s Day, and during Black History Month it is also a celebration of empowerment. Néhémie shares,
“As a young Canadian black woman, I grew up looking for a figure that would allow me to feel safe in a society where I often felt undesirable and unprotected. Learning to love myself has helped me find a sense of fulfillment and abundance that stopped me from projecting my needs onto others. I was also inspired by my community and the women around me. The way love and self-care are seen and experienced in black cultures (films, music, social media, etc.) has influenced my desire to create this project. It is a story of healing for my community and all marginalized women.”
First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hi! I’m Néhémie, a singer/songwriter from Montreal. Music has been a big part of my life from a very young age. I’ve been singing since forever and started writing when I was around 10. I grew up in a musical family, listening to a lot of jazz, gospel, and rnb. And that love for music really stuck with me. I started releasing my own music around 2020.
Tell us a bit about your recent release.
My latest single ‘RUN’ is a song that I wrote almost 4 years ago! I wanted to write a song that really speaks to female empowerment, women taking charge and owning their power, even if it comes off as a bit bold and in-your-face. It’s a side of me that I don’t easily show in real life, but every now and then, I just want to freely speak my mind. I teamed up with one of my favourite rappers out of Montreal, SLM. She was super excited to jump on the track, and she really brought a lot to it. Her contribution added so much value to the whole vibe of the song!
How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?
I don’t typically approach creating in a specific way. I like to flow and just let it happen naturally. The only rule I have is to be open. Open to where the inspiration may come from, open to trying new things, new ideas, and new sounds. I try not to box myself in. As an artist, I believe that the only way to keep growing and not be stagnant is to never limit yourself.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?
There’s so much still to come, this single is only the beginning of a much bigger journey. I can’t reveal everything just yet, but there’s more music and visuals on the way very soon. I’m also working on shows that will eventually be announced so stay tuned, it’s going to be a very exciting year! I’ll also be able to announce shows eventually. So, stay tuned, it’s going to be a very exciting year!
Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?
I’d say this moment right now and everything that is to come this year is definitely the highlight of my career so far. I’ve been working on this music for the last 4 to 5 years and to finally get to share it with everyone is so exciting, truly a dream come true.
Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?
Montreal’s got a ton of talent, especially in the R&B scene. My brother, JBRL, just dropped his first project! I’m also a big fan of Sajaa and SLM of course. Honestly, the talent here is endless. I could go on and on about the amazing artists in this city!
