Kate Von Heart Unveils New EP, That Isn’t You And Me (Part I)

Strongly influenced by the expression of her subconscious mind, cinematic romance, and alternative rock, Kate Von Heart is a Montreal-based singer-songwriter with a bewitching sensibility.

Today, she unveiled her five-song EP, That Isn’t You And Me (Part I).

The EP, styled as gloomy rock, intricately captures the poignant mourning of a romanticized yet ultimately disappointing relationship. This musical journey is characterized by catchy melodies, emotionally raw lyrics infused with a hint of sarcasm, and her warm, passionate vocals. The album’s musical backdrop spans from comforting melancholy to cathartic intensity, creating a rich and engaging experience for the listener.

First off care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Sure! I’m a singer-songwriter from Montreal. I studied music and have been working in the music business for 11 years now. I’ve played shows across Canada with several bands ranging from rockabilly, top 40 to vocal trios and I’m now getting started with my first solo project under the name Kate Von Heart.

Tell us a bit about your recent release.

Styled as gloomy rock, my debut EP “That Isn’t You And Me (Part I)” was strongly influenced by my subconscious mind, cinematic romance, and alternative rock. It’s a two-part conceptual album that depicts the mourning of the romanticized ideal of a relationship.

To illustrate the inner conflict of this grieving process, the song order of the album follows the events chronologically. So when you listen to the album from a to z in order, the intensity of the songs doesn’t necessarily have a logical direction, just like mourning.

Co-produced with the ridiculously talented Ryan Battistuzzi (Malajube, Les Shirley, We Are Wolves), this debut EP features catchy melodies and emotionally raw lyrics with a hint of sarcasm. The music ranges from comforting melancholy to cathartic intensity.

How do you typically go about the songwriting process? Do you have a specific method or creative routine that you follow?

I’d say that my songwriting process tends to vary at times. I like to try different approaches, experiment, and play. Sometimes I need constraints and sometimes I need total freedom. Ultimately, I just go as I feel in the moment. A thing that really works for me is taking the time to sit and write regularly, I just create and welcome whatever comes. Then, afterward, I refine the songs I like.

For this particular album, my way of composing was very instinctive. I would start by playing chords that I liked either on the ukulele, the guitar, or the piano and, then, I would sing melodies phonetically, then words and sentences would emerge and somehow dictate the message of each song. This writing method was helpful and therapeutic for me. It helped me tap into my subconscious mind and produce lyrics of honesty that were sometimes disconcerting to me.

Looking ahead, what are your plans for supporting this new release? Are there any upcoming tours, music videos, or additional content that fans can look forward to in connection with this project?

There’s a lot of exciting work going on behind the scenes right now. I’m planning a music video, booking shows, and also the « Part II » is already in the making. Stay tuned!

Looking back on your musical career, is there a particular moment or accomplishment that you consider a turning point or a highlight?

I’d say that releasing my first singer-songwriter project and making this album have definitely been a big turning point in my career. It’s a new and exciting path that I have yet to explore.

Last but not least, it’s time to pay it forward, what upcoming band or artist would you recommend your fans check out?

I would definitely recommend the not-so-upcoming band from Montreal, Bon Enfant. I’ve listened to their self-titled album I don’t know how many times! It has a bubbly, 70’s music road-trip vibe that I absolutely adore!
