Yesterday at a star-studded press conference in Toronto, the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced the nominees and newly added performers for the 2024 Juno Awards!
Leading the pack with six nominations is Montreal’s Charlotte Cardin, whose nominations include Single of the Year, Album of the Year, Artist of the Year; while international R&B superstar, Daniel Caesar, and breakthrough social media sensation, TALK, both received five nominations, and Grammy-winning folk superstar, Allison Russell, 2023 Polaris Music Prize shortlist nominee, Aysanabee, actor and rapper, Connor Price, production duo DVBBS, power-pop singer-songwriter, Lauren Spencer Smith, and pop sensation, Tate McRae.
TALK will also join previously announced performers The Beaches, Charlotte Cardin, and JUNO host, Nelly Furtado, as well as rising country star Josh Ross, and BC-based Punjabi singer, rapper, and songwriter, Karan Aujla, onstage at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax as part of the 53rd Annual JUNO Awards broadcast.
In addition to the nominations, CARAS and MusiCounts, Canada’s leading music education charity, announced the nominees for the 2024 MusicCounts Teacher of the Year award. The 2024 nominees are Élisabeth Bouchard-Bournie of École Des Explorateurs in Malartic, QC, Sarah Comerford of Macdonald Drive Junior High in St. John’s, NL, Stephen Richardson of École St. Joseph in Yellowknife, NT, Robert Bailey of École Charlie Killam School in Camrose, AB, and Zeda Ali of Sunnyview Middle School in Brampton, ON.
It was also announced that veteran Halifax entertainment lawyer and artist manager, Chip Sutherland, will receive this year’s Walt Grealis Special Achievement Award; which recognizes individuals whose work has significantly impacted the growth and development of the Canadian music industry. After graduating from Dalhousie’s Schulich School of Law in 1988, Sutherland’s music journey would lead to him first serving as drummer for pop-rock group BlackPool, all while starting his law practice. He soon incorporated his legal knowledge into his passion for music, by helping Halifax legends, Sloan, negotiate their first record deal and becoming their manager. Over the years, Sutherland’s support and influence as a manager and a lawyer have been integral to the success and development of countless Canadian musicians including Feist, The Rankin Family, and Alvvays; while his role within CARAS included instrumental roles in creating MusiCounts and the Radio Starmaker Fund.
Previously announced special award recipients also include Tegan and Sara, who will be honoured by Academy Award®-nominated actor, writer, producer, director, and Halifax native, Elliot Page, with the prestigious 2024 Humanitarian Award; while the Canadian Music Hall of Fame will induct celebrated hip-hop pioneer, Maestro Fresh Wes.
The 2024 JUNO celebrations commence on Thursday, March 21, in Halifax culminating with the 53rd Annual JUNO Awards broadcast on Sunday, March 24 at 8 p.m. ET/9 p.m. AST on CBC TV. The broadcast from Scotiabank Centre will also stream live across on CBC Gem, CBC Radio One, CBC Music, CBC Listen, and globally at CBCMusic.ca/junos and CBC Music’s YouTube page.
Tickets for The 2024 JUNO Awards are on sale and start at $49.00 (plus tax and fees) and are available for purchase at www.ticketmaster.ca/junos.
