Annabel Gutherz shares new single, “Eclipse”

Montreal singer and songwriter Annabel Gutherz reveals her new single”Eclipse”

Canadian singer and songwriter Annabel Gutherz reveals her new single, “Eclipse,” out now on all streaming platforms. Blending classic rock influences with modern pop sounds, “Eclipse” is a vivid and textured song that showcases an artist who has found her voice. The new single was co-written with and produced by Mikal Blue (OneRepublic, Jason Mraz, Colbie Caillat) and Bret “Epic” Mazur (Crazy Town, Prince, The Black Eyed Peas).

“‘Eclipse’ is about my tendency to compare myself to others and the impact this has on my self-esteem,” Annabel says. “I would rather be concentrated on purpose than consumed by comparison despite how challenging it may be at times, especially given the ubiquitous nature of social media. This single showcases my desire to focus on my own path and nurture my inner confidence.”

Born and raised in Montreal, Annabel Gutherz creates timeless music that speaks to the soul of what it means to be human. Combining her compelling and diaristic storytelling with honeyed melodies, distinct vocals, and her keen musical intuition, Annabel’s songs take listeners on a heartfelt journey packed with raw honesty and emotional conviction.

Since the release of her 2021 album, Loose Ends, Annabel has continued to develop her sound by working with an array of esteemed collaborators, including Bleu McAuley (Selena Gomez, Demi Lovato, Jonas Brothers) and Bonnie Hayes (Bonnie Raitt, Bette Midler, David Crosby). Fiercely committed to her craft, Annabel also holds a baccalaureate and a master’s degree in songwriting from Berklee College of Music. With her undeniable talent and more music in the works for 2024, Annabel Gutherz is certainly an artist to keep on your radar.

Care to introduce yourself?

Absolutely! I’m Annabel Gutherz, and I’m a singer-songwriter from Montreal. Outside of music, I love spending time with my family, friends, and dog, Walter, learning about different cultures, experiencing the world through travel (especially Italy), and eating anything of the chocolate variety!

Tell us about the process of recording “Eclipse”?

“Eclipse” is a song I started writing on the keyboard in my bedroom in Montreal, continued writing on a plane over the Colorado Rocky Mountains, and finished writing on Christine McVie’s piano at Revolver Recordings in Thousand Oaks, California. I also had the distinct privilege of working alongside Mikal Blue and Bret “Epic” Mazur on this song. Experiencing their illustrious creativity and artistry firsthand was such a gift. Producing “Eclipse” wasn’t linear and thus a little challenging to explain. We were adamant about hybridizing acoustic and synthetic sounds, which made for a very iterative process that saw us exploring different musical avenues for many months. I was fortunate and honored to collaborate with some of the most seasoned and esteemed musicians who helped bring the song to fruition, including Laurence Juber on guitar, and Victor Indrizzo on drums. Recording the song was predominantly done at Revolver Recordings, although I managed to record a few vocal tracks at home in Montreal as well!

The process of creating “Eclipse” was a journey that is indelible in my heart as it is in my mind, and was a surreal experience that I will treasure forever. I am deeply grateful for such opportunities and “pinch me” moments!

What’s it like being a musician in Montreal?

Being an artist in Montreal has been so special. I had the opportunity to create music with some of the most proficient musicians and wonderful people. Everyone from Fabrice Jean, the sound engineer I worked with on my debut album, to Kaven Girouard, the guitarist, to Dominique Messier, the producer, I walked away with more than a record in “Loose Ends,” but an extended family. Working alongside Dominique, his genius, and learning invaluable musical and worldly insight from him were some of the most rewarding and fun experiences I’ve had in my career to date.

Who was the first and most recent Canadian artist to blow you away?

The first Canadian artist to inspire me was Joni Mitchell! Stylistically transgressive with such poetic and well-crafted stories featuring her beautiful and honest voice, Joni Mitchell’s music transcends time and takes every listener on a vivid journey. The most recent Canadian artist to take me aback is Lauren Spencer Smith… The emotionality in her voice and the mesmeric way she expresses herself through song render me awestruck every time!

You’ve been making music for a bit of time now, what’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?

One piece of advice I can offer to those starting out would be to clutch your reason for pursuing music tightly in your heart as you take each day as it comes. Keep going, despite how challenging the journey may be at times, and your resolve will be your compass and guiding light!
