Jaya Bremer shares electro-dance fantasies on “Our Potential”
Based in Victoria, British Columbia, dream-pop artist Jaya Bremer has been a part of the Victoria music scene for nearly a decade — fronting and managing a gypsy jazz quintet, a Patsy Cline tribute band, an indie-rock band called Wise Child, and launching her own solo project with the release of her 2020 album Everybody’s Getting Married.
Following her recent single “Apartment 4”, Bremer shares the soft-electro dance track “Our Potential,” co-produced by Austin Tufts (of Montreal band Braids) and Victoria’s Chris Neal. Taking a cue from the minimalist beats and heart-on-sleeve ethos of Robyn, Bremer builds the track upon hand-drum loops and dreamy synth pads, culminating in a psychedelic, four-on-the-floor outro at the 2-minute 45-second point.
Bremer evokes butterflies-in-stomach emotion over the chorus singing: “I’m aware of the distance between us / I’m aware when our knees touch / I’m running out of patience, how about you?”
Bremer shares:
“This song is written about a crush developed outside of a committed relationship. It is about the longing, the fantasy of someone else that you know little about and can project your desires onto. Our Potential was written as an outlet for this desire, as a way of allowing myself to explore that longing without doing something I was likely to regret. This song is about not wanting to compromise, but to have it all, the freedom and fun, as well as the person waiting for me at home.”
The track features Bremer on synth and vocals, Chris Neal on synth and guitar, and Austin Tufts on drums and synth.
