Kayla Williams Shares Her New Single, “You Call Me”

Calgary, AB-based yacht-pop artist Kayla Williams has unveiled her brand new single, “You Call Me,” which follows her previous release, “Come Close” and “In Your Paradise.” All three tracks are from her upcoming EP, RETRODELIA.

“You Call Me” is a magnetic yacht-rock-inspired bop with a nostalgic retro charm. This empowering track is an unapologetically sassy anthem that oozes feminine intuition. With its blend of bass, shaker, and swirling strings, “You Call Me” is about learning your worth and letting go of those who can’t make the effort.

Review

When it comes to yacht-pop, Kayla Williams brings a refreshing, catchy energy in her latest single, “You Call Me.” Opening with the lines, “Got my number from a friend who thought we might be a good fit, you started callin’ me from then, sweet talkin’ me again and again,” “You Call Me” immediately hooks listeners with its relatable narrative.

The chorus serves as the song’s emotional core, driving home the singer’s frustration and desire for authenticity in their interactions. It’s not only the most infectious part of the track but also the heart of their message.

Towards the end of the song, the lyrics become more assertive, with the protagonist making it clear that they won’t entertain these calls anymore. The lines, “But you still call me, babe, I’m not gonna answer you,” make it clear they’re saying a strong ‘no’ to the caller’s advances.

Overall, “You Call Me” effectively captures a universally frustrating facet of contemporary dating and relationships. The song promises to trigger a diverse spectrum of emotions in its listeners, ranging from relatability and empowerment to enjoyment and introspection, all while providing a thoroughly entertaining experience that is sure to leave an impact.

First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Kayla Williams here, a yacht-pop songstress from Calgary, Alberta! I make retro-inspired pop music, heavily pulling influences from yacht-rock royalty like Hall & Oates, Steely Dan & The Doobie Brothers!

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

“You Call Me” is a self-empowered track about the dreaded ‘situationship’. Anyone who’s currently in the dating sphere knows how frustrating and inconsistent it can be- that was my motivation with this tune, and while it really should’ve been called “you text me” it just didn’t have the same ring! Musically, I love that it builds from a gentle arrangement to a full band, swirling string journey and it has some of my favourite vocals/harmonies I’ve done on a track!

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I will be playing some performances in Calgary in November such as the Blue Jay Sessions holiday edition Nov 26. For more dates, you can check out my website.

If given the chance, which Canadian artist would you love to work with in the future?

I would LOVE to collab with Ralph a Toronto pop artist who I adore, I also love Hawksley Workman and Begonia!!

What’s your goal for 2024?

2024 will hopefully be full of music festivals, some touring through at least Western Canada, and maaaaaybe some new music 😉
