Canadian Beats Passport – Leonardo Barbadoro – “Vibi” (Single Review)

Leonardo Barbadoro Shares Focus Track, “Vibi” From Musica Automata Album

Leonardo Barbadoro, formerly known by his electronic alias Koolmorf Widesen, is an Italian musician and producer based in Florence.

The versatile composer has released his highly anticipated album Musica Automata, an LP comprised of orchestral music performed entirely by robots, via Helical Records.

The ensemble of musical robots that is Musica Automata, includes numerous classical instruments (percussion, woodwind, brass, organ) as well as many unconventional instruments, making it the largest orchestra of robots in existence. Controlled remotely by Leonardo, many of the parameters (dynamics, sound envelope, and more) are also programmed, adding subtle ‘human’ nuances to the robotic performance, breathing life into the automation. Pushing the boundaries of what we know sonically, Leonardo Barbadoro is a pioneer in his approach to merging contemporary classical and electronic influences, presenting a finished product that is totally unique in its spellbinding differentiation and combination of two seemingly contradictory themes. Abound with interesting poly-rhythms, intricate motifs, and microtonal melodies, there’s a clear display of honed musicality here, as the various robotically played instruments unite across layers of cascading sounds, calling and responding in perfect unison. The sheer fact that it was programmed entirely by Leonardo and performed without the touch of a human is where the true value lies. It’s beautifully unpredictable and distinctly experimental.

Review

It’s easy to see why “Vibi” has been named the focus track of Musica Automata. In contrast to many other tracks on the album, “Vibi” features a simple melody, adhering to a tonal key and a standard structure. This simplicity acts as a deliberate canvas, allowing listeners to focus on the vibraphone’s distinct qualities and the artist’s innovative approach.

“Vibi” is a mesmerizing composition that introduces a hypnotic element to the listener’s experience. The hypnotic effect is most pronounced through the artist’s ingenious use of the exponential delay, often known as the “bouncing ball” effect. As the repetitive pattern unfolds, you’ll find yourself immersed in a captivating sonic voyage that’s truly enchanting.

In the grand scheme of things, this track’s groundbreaking use of the vibraphone and its determination to break new ground in music catapult it to the forefront of the album. It’s a testament to the artist’s visionary creativity and their knack for harnessing technology to craft engaging and thought-provoking music.
