Formed in Toronto in 2013, The Beaches are an energetic all-female rock band that performed yet another sold-out show in Halifax this year at the Light House Arts Centre on Friday, October 20th.

Opening for the band was Loviet – an alternative-pop / indie-rock singer-songwriter originally from Nova Scotia (now based in Toronto). Her stage presence was magnetic, effortlessly drawing everyone into the music.

Shortly after Loviet and her band finished their set, The Beaches hit the stage and had everyone’s attention. The band comprises lead vocalist and bassist Jordan Miller, guitarist Kylie Miller, keyboardist/guitarist Leandra Earl, and drummer Eliza Enman-McDaniel. The chemistry between the band members was clear, creating an energy that elevated the entire concert experience. Their setlist featured a mix of older fan favourites like “T-Shirt” and “Money” as well as every song from their recently released album Blame My Ex. This included an acoustic version of “If A Tree Falls,” and of course “Me & Me” and “Blame Brett.” Many gifts were thrown on stage for the band, including a pair of panties and a leather garter (which Leandra actually threw back to the fan after wearing for a few songs).

Beyond their musical achievements, The Beaches are celebrated for breaking down stereotypes in the industry and proving that women can rock just as hard as their male counterparts! Each member exuded confidence and passion, engaging with the crowd and feeding off the energy of the audience – I was especially impressed with Leandra’s high kicks! If you haven’t seen the band live yet, I highly recommend you do so on this cross-Canada tour that they kicked off in Halifax – If you’re able to find tickets to the sold-out shows.
