Artist: Rose-Erin Stokes
Album: When The Sun Goes Away
Release Date: September 8, 2023
Genre: Contemporary Folk

North Bay, ON-based singer-songwriter Rose-Erin Stokes released her eleven-song album, When The Sun Goes Away on September 8, 2023.

When The Sun Goes Away was produced by Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards, Kalle Mattson) in Stittsville ON, and features the musical offerings of Andrew Sowka, Vince Aquilina, Philippe Charbonneau, and Kinley Dowling (Hey Rosetta!). The album’s title, (a line taken from the album’s first single “The Same Way”’) encapsulates themes that emerge throughout the album, such as celestial imagery and a weaving together of moments of light and darkness.

The single, “I Can’t Stay” is a poignant single that delves into self-discovery, inner conflict, and relationship expectations. With the opening lines, “I could lift you up, But darlin can’t you see, It is just like gravity,” the song vividly portrays the weight of emotional baggage. It resonates with the universal struggle to remain authentic amidst external pressures, making it a deeply relatable and impactful track.

“The Weight” is a poignant tale of heartbreak and desire. Its chorus powerfully conveys the longing for emotional connection and the pain of feeling unnoticed and emotionally distant. The repetition of “Give me a reaction, I don’t wanna feel this used” and “I don’t wanna feel this blue” in the chorus serves as a poignant reminder of the singer’s deep emotions and longing.

Overall, When The Sun Goes Away takes listeners on an emotional journey, weaving a tapestry of relatable themes and musical diversity. “I Can’t Stay” and “The Weight” are just two highlights among a collection of songs that together create a compelling and memorable musical experience.
