Review
“Let’s Stay Home Tonight” encapsulates a sense of nostalgia and longing, with an easy-listening, R&B vibe. Its lyrics vividly depict a specific moment in time, bringing to life the emotions and memories tied to that cherished experience.
The chorus is the song’s emotional core, and it’s where the magic truly happens. The lines “Let’s stay home tonight, maybe we can turn down lights, and take our time baby” express a desire for intimacy and togetherness
As the song concludes, the recurring refrain of “Are we living the life or are we living a lie,” leaves the listener with a thought-provoking question, inviting them to reflect on the authenticity of the relationship or the choices made.
Overall, “Let’s Stay Home Tonight” masterfully weaves a rich emotional tapestry, seamlessly blending nostalgia, love, and an intriguing hint of uncertainty with breathtaking finesse.
Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey friends! My name’s Karina aka Kärma Sounds. I’ve been a singer in lots of awesome bands over the years, so it’s finally my time to spread my wings and fly solo. I’m originally from Montreal now based in Vancouver BC. I’m a multifaceted electro-soul, singer-songwriter, with a background in art, theatre, dance & energy healing (hence my artist name). To me, though music has always been a sacred part of my DNA. My father, a funk/soul musician in the late 60s and early 70s, exposed me to a lot of amazing music growing up, and I recently found out that my great uncle and grandfather on my mother’s side were celebrated religious Cantor singers.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
My new single ‘Let’s Stay Home Tonight’, is a smooth, mid-tempo groovy track, that’s perfect to enjoy on a cozy fall night. The song was written during the pandemic when many relationships were put to the test. It’s all about choosing to rekindle and strengthen our romantic bond in the face of adversity.
I co-wrote and co-produced it with my husband, Karl O, a talented multi-instrumentalist, who also plays synths on the track, along with our friend Doug Milledge, a TV music writer from LA. We recorded it at Echoplant Studios with David Ziehr. We also shot a super cute & fun music video, that will be released next Friday. It features myself, my husband, his vintage synths, and a few of my band members, chilling and playing music.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
My influences are rooted in Soul, Jazz, RnB, Disco, Funk, and Easy Listening Pop. Growing up, some of the records spinning in my house were; Sade, Stevie Wonder, Bill Withers, Steely Dan, Anita Baker, Quincy Jones, and The Eurythmics just to name a few…I also love 90’s R&B, Acid Jazz, and NeoSoul.
My music is definitely a mashup of those influences. You can even hear in the lyrics of my latest single, that I reference Al Green, Earth Wind & Fire, and Nina Simone. With my music, I want the listener to receive healing feel-good vibes, heartfelt emotion, and a sensual, catchy beat, to make you groove.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
Yes, Friday, Sept.29th I’ll be debuting my project, with a full band at Guilt & Company with some of the top players in the city! It’s going to be my official single/music video release party and everyone’s invited! I’ll be playing a mix of unreleased originals and groovy covers.
What’s your goal for 2024?
I’m excited to be releasing more singles and more music videos, leading up to my EP/Album release in 2024. I would LOVE to play the Int’l Jazz Fest in Vancouver and cross Canada, especially my hometown Montreal – That’s major on my bucket list! My goal is to make people feel REALLY good when they listen to my music and want to play it over and over on repeat.
