Review
From the start of “Misery,” the lyrics “Always on the fray, Never knowing what to say,” establishes the groundwork for a journey of self-exploration.
The commanding yet melancholic female vocals join forces with the introspective lyrics, diving deep into themes of self-realization, inner turmoil, and the relentless pursuit of truth.
The chorus takes center stage within the song, with its recurrent line, “The patterns that are leading me” emphasizing the notion of recognizing recurring behaviors or choices that may be causing distress or turmoil. Using this lyrical repetition, the chorus leaves a lasting impact and reinforces the song’s themes of introspection and the pursuit of truth.
Overall, “Misery” is a thought-provoking track that will likely appeal to a broad range of audiences, from rock to metal and beyond.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Byrdy is a 5-piece female-fronted rock band based out of Toronto, ON. We create a unique sonic landscape that combines driving guitar riffs, melodic piano, and haunting vocals. Our sound is complex and passionate and we’re looking forward to engaging with our fans, both old and new, and continuing to explore our sound.
We formed in 2019 and chose the name Byrdy after our lead singer’s nickname given to her by a long-time friend. We had originally set out to write and record an EP and get out on stage to play live during that time, but then COVID hit. We ended up turning that EP into a full-length album that we wrote and recorded without having been in the same room with each other. Once all of the restrictions had lifted, we took off running with all 10 songs from the album having been played on radio stations across the GTA and set out to turn some heads with our live shows.
Since that time, we have released several singles including our covers of Mad World and Running Up That Hill, and our original song Seen Better Days, which will be on our newest EP expected to be released later this year.
Byrdy puts on a great live show. It’s important to us to not only sound great live, but make sure our fans have a great time when they come out to watch us. You won’t be disappointed and we can’t wait to see you in the crowd.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
Our newest song, “Misery” is out now. It was released in tandem with our first official music video, which is really exciting.
The song is a soul-stirring anthem about not fitting in, the feeling of being on the outside looking in, and the emotional weight it carries. It starts off quite simple with just piano and Robyn and then builds into this huge-sounding rock ballad.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
All of the members of Byrdy are songwriters so our influences and sources of inspiration are all different, however, Robyn, our lead singer writes the majority of the songs and lyrics and tends to draw ideas through the emotion of the music and how it makes her feel. She also listens to several different artists, both signed and local when seeking inspiration for new songs.
There really isn’t a magic method behind the songwriting, sometimes you get lucky and ideas flow easily and other times, it might come in stages, so that is when she would write ideas down and gradually build them into a song.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
We are playing Tail of the Junction in Toronto with our friends Apricity on September 29th, then we are part of a concert series being hosted by Petrock Radio on October 7th at Erben in Peterborough, followed by Oct 26th at the Bovine Sex Club with Frail Fragment and The Android Meme and then a fun Halloween show Oct 27th at the Atria in Oshawa.
What’s your goal for 2024?
We are planning to release a 2 part EP, with the first coming out towards the end of 2023 and the second coming out approximately midway through 2024. The EPs are expected to have 5-6 original songs each.
We are also going to be applying to as many different festivals as we can with NXNE, Voodoo Rock Fest, and Gussapalooza being on our radar as well as playing several venues around the GTA.
