Toronto’s SEWN Unveils New Single, “Fractured Anatomy”
Emerging from the vibrant and diverse musical landscape of Toronto, ON, SEWN is a rising force in the world of modern metal. With their electrifying sound and raw passion for heavy music, they are set to ignite the global metal scene with a blaze that’s impossible to ignore.
SEWN is more than just a band; they are an auditory onslaught. Their music is a sonic tapestry woven with intricate guitar riffs, thunderous drumming, and vocals that range from haunting melodies to guttural roars. Led by founding members Alexandra Hunter (Vocals) and Brett Nemeth (Drums), the band was founded in 2020 during the global COVID-19 pandemic. Rounded out by recent additions Dylan Vieira (Guitars/Vocals) and Jesse Manou (Bass), SEWN draws inspiration from the genre staples Knocked Loose, Gideon, Silent Planet, and Varials, while infusing their own unique flair that’s both excitingly familiar and refreshingly new.
Last week, the band unveiled their fourth single, “Fractured Anatomy.” This track is a sonic journey through the depths of the human psyche, exploring the grief of past traumas and healing. With bone-crushing riffs and lyrics that cut to the core, “Fractured Anatomy” promises to be a visceral experience that leaves listeners craving more.

First off, care to introduce SEWN to our readers?
SEWN is a four-piece band from Toronto, Canada. We like to consider ourselves a modern metalcore band, but we draw our influences from a variety of genres such as hardcore, metalcore, deathcore, and progressive metal. For us, songwriting has always been about pushing ourselves to draw from a place of emotion rather than confining ourselves to one style of music, and so lyrically we tend to lean into darker subject matter and shine a light on subjects that are sometimes considered taboo or obscure.
You’ve unveiled your latest single, “Fractured Anatomy.” Tell us a bit about the writing process behind the release.
“Fractured Anatomy” came together a little differently than our typical writing process. It started with a poem that had been written by our vocalist, Aly [Alexandra Hunter], a few years prior to its incarnation. The poem was about a very personal experience where someone very close to Aly had passed, and so we worked with our producer, Luc Chiasson, to develop it in a way that encapsulated those undertones in the music. Because of this, the song is a bit more atmospheric-driven than our previous material, and I think it really presents the complexity of emotions that surround you when experiencing grief and loss.
With themes of grief, loss, and mental health, what is the main thing you want to get across to listeners through the track?
We wanted “Fractured Anatomy” to be a magnifying glass into a very deep and personal subject. Lyrically, the song is actually about acceptance and reconciliation, so we constructed it in a way, structurally, where it brings the listener on this journey through the stages of grief. Our hope is that it will inspire others who may be experiencing a similar situation in their life, and help them connect in a time where it’s so easy to feel isolated and alone.
You are also unveiling a music video to accompany the release. What was the highlight of the video shoot?
We chose to do a short visualizer for this release. When talking with our video production team, we tasked them to create something more conceptual and ethereal as opposed to a storyline music video. In the frame, Aly is seen hugging another person (our friend Stephen ‘Stiv’ Scott from Seagrave). This is actually based on Aly’s dream the night before her friend’s funeral, of whom the song was written. Seeing the final product was a real highlight of the whole release as it represents a final goodbye to this person, and captures that moment of acceptance.
You’ve played two Cross-Ontario tours throughout the Summer months. For someone who has yet to see you perform live, describe your performance in 5 words or less.
Expressive, energetic, emotional, raw and inclusive.
Last but not least, what else do you have up your sleeve in 2023?
We still have more to come in 2023. Currently, we are in the planning stages of a final music video for the year for a song we finished recording in April. This song is one of our heaviest yet, and will have a guest feature from a very dear friend of ours. We are also in the process of writing an EP which will hopefully be out sometime next year. I think with the release of ‘Fractured Anatomy’, we are looking forward to diving deeper into experimentation with our sound, and so this EP will expand on everything that has come so far from the band.
