Indie Artist girly. Drops Electrifying New Single ‘Dime,’ Produced by Grammy Award-Contributor Chin Injeti

girly., a multiracial indie artist from Abbotsford, British Columbia, is out with a new single, “Dime,” produced by Chin Injeti, a three-time Grammy Award album contributor who has collaborated with the likes of DJ Khalil, Dr. Dre, and Eminem.

The easy, breezy listen builds on girly.’s success last year with “Boyish,” which the artist performed throughout 2022 in and around Van City, including during Black Music Month in June. girly. calls “Dime” one of the fastest songs he’s made. “It was like it wrote itself,” he said.

Sometimes the cut feels like a love letter to a specific person – “I had four dollars in my pocket, I had four dollars in my pocket/Spent my last dime on you, I spent my last dime on you” – so goes the addictive hook. Other times, it feels more like a love letter to being on the come up with your friends, at a specific time and in a specific place.

“Dime’s” music video, shot by Joe Salmon, Pamath Vinlaka, and Daniel Lin, brings Vancouver alive like only those who live there could. girly. twists open a Sunny D right in front of Riddim & spice, a popular haunt for Caribbean food in the Grandview-Woodland neighborhood – known for its multiethnic population that includes East Asians and First Nations populations. The Super 8 effect of the music video brings an element of nostalgia to these images, too.

On working with Injeti, girly. is stoked.

“As soon as Chin played the first chords, I knew we had something amazing on our hands.”

This is the first time the two have collaborated and girly. is excited about future collabs and adds that they connected at just the right time.

“When Chin Injeti and I met he (Chin) said that he wants us to make happy music, and me (girly.), just coming out of a dark place in my life, was very excited to hear this because I spent the past year writing very dark music. Dime was very refreshing for me mentally!,” girly. said.

Joining girly. on stage are his trusted bandmates who were thrilled to hear the song and start playing it live. girly. himself also pushed his musical bounds.

“Dime is the first song I learned on the guitar and what started my guitar journey!” he explains.

Care to introduce yourself?

Hello! My name is girly. I’m an artist from Abbotsford, BC. I make music and I really like cats but I’m allergic. I also really enjoy walking through the city and having good eats with my friends. Thanks for chatting with me :).

Tell us about the process of writing and recording “Dime.”

Honestly, it was a super easy and freeing process. As Chin Injeti (producer) started working on the beat I was sitting in the corner of the room racking my brain trying to find something to go off of. As I was doing so, I reached into my pocket and found two toonies, I then started humming “I got $4 in my pocket” and I knew that had to be a chorus! Previously, I had been studying some other music and practicing with my writing and I realized that a lot of these great songs are so simple but so complex lyrically. I always thought songs needed to be super complex lyrically to be great and I always wanted to have some complex bar that you really have to think about but I decided to take the other route on Dime, simple yet effective. And since then I have really learned how to merge the two of them together and I really enjoy it!

What’s it like being a musician in Abbotsford?

It’s kind of nice because there aren’t many artists coming out of Abbotsford. Like, I know a few but not many. I used to feel a bit weird saying I’m from Abbotsford because no one knew where that was so I would just say I’m from Vancouver. But now I proudly say it because I really want to put on for the place that I’m from.

Who was the first and most recent Canadian artist to blow you away?

The first artist that I really found interesting from Canada would have to be one that’s closer to home, Dwalk. He was someone I listened to quite a bit who was close to my city and was making some really cool moves in the city! young friend is the most recent artist that I found from Canada. Everything he does is absolutely amazing. I really enjoyed “feral canadian scaredy cat” it’s such a passionate-sounding song and has so much life in it. I also really really enjoyed the video for it as well. He definitely deserves a lot of hype.

You’ve been making music for a while now. What’s one piece of advice you can offer to those starting out?

I think I can sum it up in two points: passion and pushing through doubt. Passion is your driving force. It’s about utilizing what you already have, like GarageBand, rather than rushing to buy expensive equipment. I learned that making something great with very little can be incredibly rewarding. Trust in your abilities and keep experimenting. Pushing through doubt is equally important. Expect to create some not-so-great songs, and people might criticize them. But as long as you recognize that every song contributes to your growth, you’re on the right track. Develop a mental “brain filter” to sift through feedback, accepting constructive criticism even if it stings. Furthermore, surround yourself with trustworthy, supportive individuals who provide honest feedback. They will guide you on your creative journey, helping you refine your skills and continue pursuing your passion. In the end, it’s the combination of your passion, resilience, and a supportive network that will lead you to success in music and really anything in life.
