Band: Sleepy Kicks
EP: Fizz
Release Date: August 4, 2023
Genre: Rock
Dartmouth, NS-based four-piece, indie-garage band Sleepy Kicks have recently unveiled their six-song EP, Fizz.
Fizz is a collection of songs from what the band calls a “3-year time-hole,” recorded between Üthful Studio, Ocean Floor Studio, Future Dad Studio, and various basements. Fizz was produced by the band, mixed by John Mullane, and engineered by John, Franc Lopes, and Braden Kamermans.
“We wanted to take these songs from different eras of our life as a band and give them all a similar shine, as if they were what we think glam rock is or like a big dad rock arena thing but with some extra bite and sweetness. We gave John a million layers of guitar, he did his thing and breathed life into them with a ton of clarity.”
The latest single, and focus track, “Diamonds” was written before the pandemic and “used to be kind of a show-handsy fake jazz ditty,” said the band. “You’re exhausted and really pushing your luck, and you’ve become aware that the glow is fading. It entails snapshots of your memory when you’re back home by yourself at the end of the night and don’t have all the pieces available. So, we went a bit over the top, roasted it with a bunch of distortion, and tried to make it stressful and frantic.”
Review
The fifth song featured on Fizz, titled “Diamonds,” is a mesmerizing indie-pop garage track that expertly combines reflective lyrics with a highly contagious melody.
The lyrics tell an exciting story of adventurous discovery, a mix of feelings, and a search for enduring memories. The repeated line “You are my favorite little thing” suggests an intense fixation, portraying the passion and desire felt by the main character.
In short, “Diamonds” reflects youth, rebellion, and the search for meaning in a fast world. Its honest exploration of excitement and vulnerability makes it a captivating song that lingers in the mind long after the final note.
