Nerve Shack Recently Unveiled New Single, “Ash”

Newfoundland-based young alt-rock trio, Nerve Shack formed in 2021 when rhythm guitarist, vocalist, & songwriter, Ryan Kelly started jamming with lead guitarist, Oliver Quinton. Aiden Osmond soon joined the fold to provide drums.

Between Ryan’s love for 90’s grunge and 2000’s pop rock, Oliver’s affinity for obscure, niche artists, and Aiden’s adoration of hard rock, electronic, and experimental music, Nerve Shack is inspired by a wealth of musical influences.

The trio unveiled their latest single, “Ash,” which follows the previous single, “Forever In Your Lie.”

For fans of Silverchair, Jimmy Eat World, and Foo Fighters.

NERVE SHACK is a young alt. rock trio out of NL that formed in 2021 consisting of rhythm guitarist, vocalist, & songwriter, Ryan Kelly; lead guitarist, Oliver Quinton and drummer Aiden Osmond.

NERVE SHACK continue to perform gigs in St. John’s and the surrounding area, and recently reconnected with musician, and producer, Matt Dines at Hurricane Music to record their latest singles, “Yellow Teeth,” “Forever in Your Lie,” and “Ash.” “Yellow Teeth” was released in February 2023. “Forever in Your Lie” was released on July 5th, 2023. Their latest single, Ash is out now, July 27, 2023.

The band looks forward to playing live every chance they get, recording new material, and touring across Atlantic Canada and beyond to reach new audiences in the near future.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Our latest single Ash was a bit of a deviation for us. It’s a mix of country and rock which we hope will appeal to a broad audience. Madeline Carter provided fiddle which really gave it the feeling we were looking for. While at his Aunt’s birthday party one evening, Ryan came up with the main riff and chorus for the song. The lyrics came later and tell the story of a rocky relationship -whether it be with a significant other, family member, or friend.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Ryan is one of those songwriters who is lucky enough that the words just come to him. He starts with a riff or melody then piece by piece it comes together with each band member creating their parts. Sometimes Oliver will come to a session with a riff, and we go from there. Usually, Ryan gets his inspiration from listening to new music that he hasn’t heard before from a variety of genres, or Tv, movies, stories people tell him about; or any recent impactful events that have happened in his life.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

We have been performing around St. John’s and the surrounding areas including open mics, bars, cafes, and special events, wherever we can perform to gain as much experience as we can. Every show is a learning experience. We recently played at Camp Delight which is an oncology camp where kids with cancer get to enjoy being a kid and forget about all the ‘hospital stuff’ for a week. This was very special for us and we happily agreed to play there again next year. We also have a few upcoming shows booked in venues around downtown St. John’s including The Ship Pub and an outdoor multi-band show in Bowring Park.

What’s your goal for 2023?

2023 has been great for NERVE SHACK! We received support from MusicNL in late 2022 which made it possible to record 3 singles this year. We recently signed a management contract with Hurricane Music. Our goal for the rest of this year would be to write more new material, get a few more songs recorded, one of which we hope will be in Toronto with Brian Moncarz in September, gain more followers (hint, hint) (social media is a full-time job lol) and of course, performing whenever we can! We’re really hoping to hit the road and tour Atlantic Canada in 2024.
