Andrew Matheson is a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, composer, and educator based in Toronto, Ontario. A classically trained pianist and guitarist, he has worked with many artists in a variety of styles of music.

Andrew unveiled his eleven-song debut solo piano record, In Collective Solitude in April, and was written during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I wrote the record in the evenings of 2020 at the height of the pandemic. The title was inspired by a Globe and Mail article I read in late March 2020 describing how, while we were all in isolation, everyone was in it together so we weren’t entirely alone – although it didn’t always feel that way. The article resonated with me and felt deeply tied to the music I was writing at the time. Feelings of loneliness and longing are pervasive through the record, and with the quietness of the pandemic nights highlighted particularly in songs like “Resonance”.”

“Daylight” sets the tone for the album, capturing listeners with its uplifting and melodic nature. The composition maintains a consistent pace, immersing the listener in its enchanting atmosphere. No matter if you’re in search of relaxation, introspection, or an uplifting artistic journey, this track will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression with its captivating, serene, and beautiful ambiance.

“Restless” immediately captures a chaotic essence, taking listeners on a wild and exhilarating musical journey. The tempo changes and sudden shifts in dynamics keep the listener on their toes, heightening the sense of unpredictability and intensity. Overall, this track is a thrilling and captivating experience for those seeking a departure from conventional piano music, provoking strong emotions and leaving a lasting impression.

Ending the release, “Resonance” establishes a somber and introspective atmosphere within the first few notes. The sparse and delicate piano chords create a sense of space and solitude, as if the listener is transported to a desolate, yet beautiful place. This track truly shines in painting a vivid emotional picture, particularly resonating with the emotions of isolation, longing, and loneliness that were prevalent during the height of the pandemic. It serves as a gentle reminder of the inherent beauty one can discover within moments of solitude.

Overall, In Collective Solitude serves as a companion for those seeking solace and understanding within their own experiences of solitude, offering a heartfelt and evocative musical journey.
