Canadian Rockers The Monoxides Return After Two Decades With New Music, Reissue of Classic Album

Canadian rock band The Monoxides release their first new music in more than two decades with the unveiling of their new single, “Let Her Know.” The track is one of two new songs the band has slated for release in 2023 with a new, full-length album on the horizon for 2024.

Drawing influence from their heroes in bands like Kiss and Cheap Trick, “Let Her Know” sees the group proudly wearing their influences on their sleeves, with an infectious intertwining of guitar harmonies, pulsing rhythm and melodic vocals.

“We’re thrilled to finally be releasing new music,” says guitarist-vocalist Steve Hickox. “It’s been a long time coming, but thankfully with all the live shows we’ve been playing over the past two decades, the chemistry between us has never gone away. We really feel like we’re picking up right where we left off 23 years ago, and we hope our fans and friends feel that way too when they hear the new tunes.”

Hailing from Moncton, New Brunswick, The Monoxides first rose to national prominence with the Out of the Marsh EP (Handsome Boy Records, 1995) and full-length effort Galaxy of Stooges (BMG Music Canada, 1997), which spawned the singles “(Can’t Get) Excited” and “Little Bitta Rosie.” The latter release was produced by The Pursuit of Happiness leader Moe Berg, who called it “one of the best experiences of my life.”

The band toured Canada relentlessly and earned a reputation for energetic live shows while playing alongside acts including Our Lady Peace, ZZ Top, the Headstones, The Pursuit of Happiness, Sloan, Rusty, and Change of Heart.

Following the release of their last full-length effort, The Free Release of Energy (2000), the band took a lengthy back seat to other musical endeavours as well as the usual grown-up hustle of jobs, mortgages, and raising kids.

Through it all, The Monoxides have continued performing live throughout the Maritimes and have remained a consistent live draw, primarily based on the strength of their live show. Over the course of the last five years, the band has served in both a headliner and support capacity alongside the likes of Steven Page, The Odds, Headstones, July Talk, The New Pornographers, The Stanfields, and others.

In other exciting news for fans of the band, this summer will also see a vinyl reissue of Galaxy of Stooges released by Record Record Label, a new imprint founded by Eric Warner of We Are Busy Bodies.

“I still love the record and I wish it had made (The Monoxides) world famous rock superstars,” Berg says in the reissue’s liner notes. “Every song on it is so uniquely them, they had perfectly distilled their influences, both old and new, and I don’t think any other band could have made this record.”

The vinyl reissue of Galaxy of Stooges is limited to 300 copies and is due for release in record stores everywhere on August 25. Pre-orders are open on Bandcamp.
