Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Misty Blue is a story that began about two years ago. Meeting by chance on Kijiji, Ally, and Jake began writing songs together and performing at coffee house gigs. Their sound was soothing and intimate, bringing out the wanderlust we all know deep down.
By the summer of 2022, the duo was aware of their potential, and what they needed to take the band to the next level: a rhythm section. Returning to Kijiji, where it all began, they met Dan and Matias. It took one rehearsal for it to become clear. This was the new Misty Blue.
With drums and bass in the picture, the band sounds a little different, but the message is the same. It’s about nostalgia, youth, and the search for yourself.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
Our newest single came out on June 16th. It’s called ‘Runaway’ and we think of it as a song for lost souls. It started in Matias’s basement, but the song really came together when we went up north to a small town called Mount Forest for a little band team-building weekend.
The song tries to capture a timeless kind of sound, which is a common vibe in all the different types of music we each listen to, while also telling a story about trying to break out of the everyday into something new.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
Lyrically, a lot of our songs are really about our own experiences and stories. It’s the most natural kind of material, and a lot of the time, it’s the best way to make music that people can connect with personally.
Musically, our sound is a big mixing pot of all the influences we each bring to the table. There’s classic rock and folk in there, there’s punk, there’s soul, even shoegaze. We each take a lot of liberty in creating our own parts, and when it comes together it’s a pretty broad-strokes reflection of what we all love musically.
Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?
We just finished an awesome back-to-back week of performing at NXNE and Tall Pines Music and Arts Fest in Gravenhurst alongside Blue Rodeo, Tokyo Police Club, Serena Ryder, and a bunch of other Canadian legends. Later this summer, we are going to be headlining The Garrison on July 28th in Toronto and playing Aurorapalooza Festival on August 19th!
What’s your goal for 2023?
We want to keep growing and developing our sound, and we’ve found that the best way for us to do that is to keep gigging and keep trying to share our music on social media.
If we are getting into the wishlist, being on the cover of a magazine would be sweet, as would getting on some radio stations, and seeing some big numbers on TikTok and Spotify.
