Toronto’s Christa Couture shares folk-pop single, ” Summer Is Hot With My Little Trans Lover”

Christa Couture, an award-winning performing and recording artist, non-fiction writer, filmmaker, and broadcaster — as well as proudly Indigenous (mixed Cree and Scandinavian), queer, disabled, and a mom, has been busy over the pandemic.

In 2020 she published a memoir a personal account of cancer, the deaths of her sons, divorce — and how she got through. She also produced a series of short animated films of the same name (released January 2023), which features the work of ten other Indigenous artists.

Couture is now returning to the musical spotlight with her joyfully sunny and queer single “Summer Is Hot With My Little Trans Lover” — just in time for pride month! Couture shares her inspiration behind the track:

“When I started dating my partner, it struck me that there were very few love songs out there for they/thems. So I wrote this little love song to put a non-binary ditty into the world! My partner had jokingly referred to themselves as my “little trans lover” once in a text…and that text instantly blossomed into this song.”

The track was produced by seven-time Juno award-winning artist/producer Steve Dawson (Matt Andersen, The Deep Dark Woods) and recorded remotely between Toronto, Nashville, and Vancouver. The song features Steve Dawson on guitar, Jeremy Holmes on bass, and Gary Craig on drums.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

I’m a writer, musician, broadcaster, and filmmaker based in Toronto. I’m also proudly Indigenous (Cree and settler-Scandanavian), disabled, queer, and a mom.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

When I started dating my partner, and I was in those early, sparkly moments of falling in love, I realized there were many love songs out there for non-binary folks. Plenty of he, she, and you love songs, but no they/thems! I recorded “Summer Is Hot With My Little Trans Lover” for them for their birthday but decided I also wanted to share it with the world. It’s sweet, it’s flirty, and I hope it becomes one of many they/them love songs.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

I’ve often said I write songs by accident — they just come to me. Over the years, I’ve tried not to analyze it too much, because to be honest, there’s something kind of magical when the muse visits. That said, the songs, when they come, are always drawing from my personal experiences, so they reflect what I’m going through, what I want to understand, and what I want to share.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

No upcoming shows! But folks can watch my series of short animated films How to Lose Everything on CBC Gem, which is sort of like spending time in a room together : )

What’s your goal for 2023?

More joy, more ease, more time outside, more time with my kid, friends, and partner, more travel, and more art!
