Mykonova – Five Questions With

Mykonova

Mykonova releases a Double Sided EP

Montreal-based collective Mykonova, composed of LGBT artists Game Genie Sokolov, Aizysse Baga, and Miko, releases a Double Sided EP entitled Aizysse / Miko. These ten tracks, five of which are performed by Aizysse Baga and five by Miko, are composed and mixed by Game Genie Sokolov in collaboration with Miko. After giving us a strong preview last May with the hits Nightmare and Confusion On The Dance Floor, they shine on this offering that they will be presenting on stage as part of a launch party on June 12 at 7 p.m. at Cabaret Mado, with Sisi Superstar and Awwful as opening acts.

Side A of the double mini-album gravitates around the universe of Aizysse Baga who visits several musical genres including hip-hop, house, synth pop, and electro-dance, while Side B revolves around Miko’s proposal, an electronic music with a futuristic flavor pouring into synth pop and electronica.

An eclecticism in the styles and periods from which the three women are inspired, colors Mykonova’s productions; from childhood synthpop heroines (Kate Bush, Grace Jones, Tina Turner, Janet Jackson) to funky guitar aesthetes (Prince, Bootsy Collins, INXS), industrialists (Nine Inch Nails, Aphex Twin), alternative modernists (Ssion, Jessie Ware, Empress Of, A$H) and, finally, the sound designers of their neo-futuristic dreams (Com Truise, Neon Indian, Washed Out). The trio is looking for a new sound, an alloy of certainly familiar sounds, but diverted, claimed, and modified, in order to generate a visionary and innovative soundtrack.

Along with the Double Sided EP, Mykonova reveals a music video for Miko’s synth-pop track “Confusion On The Dance Floor.” The singer delivers a performance in front of a colorful audience at Cabaret Berlin. A nocturnal encounter ensues, with Game Genie Sokolov on guitar. It’s the complexity of a relationship expressed on a rhythmic theme, where guitar and electro intertwine to create confusion on the dance floor.

Care to introduce yourselves to our readers?

We are Mykonova, a collective formed of three alternative multidisciplinary artists wanting to share our art, our stories, and passion with the world.

Game Genie Sokolov is the mastermind behind every beat.

Miko is also helping with the composition of the beats, but mostly she’s the songwriter of the Miko EP and helps with the vocal coaching and some songwriting on Aizysse EP.

Aizysse Baga is the Drag Queen that recently joined the group, adding a twisted touch to the music. She’s the songwriter of the Aizysse EP.

If you listen to both EPs, you can see that we are travelling in two parallel worlds that are different but also similar.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

We just launched our Double Sided EP with two faces (A : Aizysse and B : Miko).

It’s 10 songs with many inspirations from our life path mostly. We are doing alternative, synth-pop, electronic music.

We talk about topics that we live daily as queer people, failed relationships, our transformation as persons and creatures. There are a lot of layers in those 10 songs.

Also, there’s a lot of empowering text that for some can look pretty intense, but for others is subtle with a twist to it.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

We tend to take inspiration from our lives, emotions, and what the beat inspires us.

We want to stay true to ourselves. It needs to represent us in all the ways possible.

We also want the 2slgbtqia community to feel represented and heard.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

So far, we have our Double Sided EP launch concert at Cabaret Mado in Montreal on June 12 starting at 7 pm with two opening acts by Awwful and Sissi Superstar. We will also have a surprise guest! Lady Boom Boom from Canada’s Drag Race season 3 will perform a song.

We also have a show at Le Bain Mathieu (Montreal) on September 23rd and for the rest, we are working on it.

Actually, anyone who wants to book 3 beautiful creatures hit us up: we are ready to bring the party everywhere!

What’s your goal for 2023?

Our goal is to get known. We worked very hard on both EPs. We are proud of the work that we did and we hope people will like it too.

Also, we want to be booked as much as we can. We would really like to share our passion with everyone.

PS: we are actually working on making a live band version of all of our songs for shows so stay tuned!
