Prairie Sound – Five Questions With

Prairie Sound

Edmonton, AB-based trio, Prairie Sound has recently unveiled their debut single, “Sober Morning.”

Recorded in 2023, “Sober Morning” describes a man’s daily battle with temptation and yearning. Acoustic guitar and bass drive the rhythm while mandolin paints the melancholy tune with strokes of hope and perseverance. The conclusion of each chorus marks the start of a new day with the rising sun, as the harmonious group vocals symbolize a sense of liberation from past struggles and hope for what lies ahead.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Amidst the smokey landscapes of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Prairie Sound emerged as an acoustic rock/modern folk band in Edmonton, Alberta. Bassist Justin Hamilton’s encounter in Banff National Park ignited an overwhelming desire to create the music he heard. Joined by singer-songwriters Ryan Locke and Brock Davidiuk, Prairie Sound draws inspiration from pop-punk, 90’s alternative, country western, and traditional roots music, Prairie Sound has crafted a modern and unique sound that can be heard in their debut single, “Sober Morning.”

So, what is Prairie Sound? Prairie Sound is something that connects us all. Honesty, love, creativity, shared experiences, heartbreak, losing it all and winning it back and travelling far away, only to find the way back home.

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

Our debut single, “Sober Morning” represents our artistic identity and sets the tone for the music we plan to create in the future. This song holds a special place for us as it represents the culmination of our hard work and creative endeavors as a band. “Sober Morning” delves into the introspective journey of a person battling temptation and yearning on a daily basis.

The song describes a man’s daily battle with temptation and yearning.

We wanted to create a piece of music that captures the complexities of human emotions and experience, resonating with listeners who may relate to the themes of resilience and addiction. “Sober Morning” is a testament to our unique sound, blending elements of pop-punk, alternative rock, and traditional roots music to create a modern sonic landscape.

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

Finding the motivation to write songs for Prairie Sound is like Arnold Swartzinegger finding the motivation to hit the gym. We are songwriters by nature and always looking to impress each other with our next best song, riff, lick, and lyric. Our shared journey as songwriters fuel our creativity and propel us forward in our quest to create music that makes us feel a sort of way.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

On June 13th at 1 pm we have an exciting appearance lined up on CJSR 88.5FM in Edmonton on Rhea March’s show “It Takes A Village” where we’ll perform live on air. Then we’re excited to be guests on Sarah Scott’s Studio B Podcast, “HomeMade In Alberta.” Lately, we have dedicated 100% of our efforts to the art of songwriting, arranging, and producing our music but we can’t wait to share our music live with our fans in the near future. Stay tuned for updates on upcoming shows and performances!

What’s your goal for 2023?

Our goal for this year is to challenge ourselves by stepping outside of our comfort zones. We are determined to refine our recording process and create a final product in the studio that we can truly be proud of. We believe that the little things can make a big difference, and we strive to go beyond just being satisfied with our music. Our aim is to be genuinely excited to share it with everyone. Keep an eye out for our sophomore single to follow up on “Sober Morning” later this summer.
