Loryn Taggart – “Scandal Monger” (Single Review)

Loryn Taggart

Montreal’s Loryn Taggart brings the swagger on her new blues/jazz/folk track “Scandal Monger”

Montreal-based genre-bending musician Loryn Taggart is ecstatic to release “Scandal Monger,” the second single off her forthcoming debut album.

“Scandal Monger” is a groove-heavy blues-folk track filled with swagger, written while Loryn was backpacking through New Zealand. Through travel, you’re bound to come in contact with individuals from all different walks of life, and solo travelers tend to experience an unspoken connection to those they meet along the way. They often have something unique in common; they’re all running away from something, are on a quest to find themselves, and are feeling lost or adventurous. This song tells a story of when Taggart found herself bonded to those she met during her travels, thus revealing some of her darkest secrets to these strangers.

“That backfired heavily,  when I realized a lot of what I would say was used against me,” she explains. “I wrote this song based on the feeling of getting very close to people, people that you wouldn’t normally get so close to, and the consequence of letting people in too quickly. I met some of my best friends during that time, and I also met some of the worst people. When we were vulnerable, we’d weaponize each other’s secrets.”

The song was written to poke fun at the idea that there will always be people you don’t vibe with, and there are always two sides to every story.

Review

From the moment the song “Scandal Monger” begins, the blues-infused rhythm draws you in, followed by Loryn’s rich, soulful vocals which keep you intrigued. Loryn demonstrates impeccable control over her voice, effortlessly navigating through the twists and turns of the song.

The lyrics throughout the track are thought-provoking, and the song appears to explore themes of weariness, seeking closure, and the desire to move on.

The repetition of the phrase “Honey honey, you don’t know what you’re talking about” adds a sense of frustration or disbelief. This lyric works to enhance the emotional depth and complexity of the song’s subject matter.

Overall, “Scandal Monger” showcases not only Loryn’s songwriter and vocal talents but also her ability to blend elements of various genres seamlessly creating her own unique and captivating musical style.
