Canadian Alternative Duo Retrofile Release New Single “In Stereo”
Edmonton-based alternative duo Retrofile has shared their latest single, “In Stereo.”
“In Stereo” was written, recorded, produced, and mixed by twin brothers Luke and Noah Martino, in their home studio in Edmonton, with mastering done by Bryan Lowe.
“‘In Stereo’ is a sonic reflection of our experiences recording/producing music over the years as well as the influences that have shaped us,” said Luke and Noah from Retrofile. “The key hook on the chorus is ‘Music gives me faith when there’s nothing to believe in anymore.’ That line sums it up for us. Our love of writing and recording music really has been the driving force of our creativity over the years.”
Listen to “In Stereo” below and learn more about Retrofile via our mini-interview.
First off, care to introduce yourselves to our readers?
Hi! My name is Noah Martino, and I am one half (the other half being my twin brother Luke) of the Indie Pop-Rock duo Retrofile.
You’ve unveiled your single, “In Stereo.” Tell us a bit about the writing process behind the track.
Some songs come together really easily. From writing to recording to mixing, you can have them finished within a week or so. “In Stereo” was not one of those songs. I think it’s because of the dynamics of the arrangement. The verses stay quite small, groovy, and dancey; and then the chorus lifts up into something anthemic. Getting that to work from a production standpoint was a hell of a time. I think the work was well worth it though, when I hear “In Stereo ” coming out of the speakers, I feel it’s doing something truly unique.
You worked with Bryan Lowe on the release. How was that experience?
Bryan has been an amazing collaborator over the last few years. Luke and I do everything “in-house”. We write, record, produce, and mix all of our own music. So, getting one more set of ears on a track before it goes out into the world is incredibly helpful. Bryan’s mastering always seems to pull the right elements of the track into focus!
What’s it like making music together as brothers?
Luke and I have been in bands in the past, and I think there is a reason it’s just the two of us now. Obviously, growing up together, we have very similar tastes in music which helps in the creative process. But on top of that, we both have a very clear vision of what we want. In the past, we would waste half a band practice or studio session just explaining what it is we’re aiming at. Now we tend to zip through creative decisions because we both know what the end goal is.
What’s up next for you in 2023?
A Lot more music! We’ll have a music video for “In Stereo” coming out soon, which we are very excited about. Live shows are being booked up, including plans for dates outside of Canada. And throughout this year, we’ll be releasing new music. So, lots to look forward to!
