We caught up with Kyle McKearney to chat about what an honour it is to receive three nominations at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and his performance at Night One of the Canadian Folk Music Awards.
Kyle has been nominated for Contemporary Album of the Year, Contemporary Singer of the Year, & Indigenous Songwriter(s) of the Year for his 2021 album, Down-Home.
Kyle will be releasing his new album, A Traveler’s Lament, on March 31, so be sure to check that out too!
Listen to Down-Home below and learn more about Kyle McKearney via our mini-interview.
First off, care to introduce yourself to our readers?
I’m Kyle McKearney, an Americana/Roots artist from Calgary, Alberta.
Tell us a bit about your newest release.
My second record, A Traveler’s Lament, is a collection of stories of heartbreaks, betrayals, and road journals I’ve gathered over my years of touring and doing music as my life. My family shows up on this record a lot, as well as I’m a husband and a father of two little boys. I’m so thrilled to have made a second record, and I hope you all are enjoying it. It comes out on March 31st.
You are nominated for three awards at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, taking place in Vancouver. What was your reaction when you found out you were nominated three times?
I was completely shocked and thrilled. It’s such an authentic genre and bunch of humans, so to be recognized in the space in any capacity for me is very touching and very much appreciated.
On April 1, night one of the Awards, you will be performing. What can attendees expect from your live performance?
I like the idea that you never know what to expect at my shows. It’s always very fluid with the moment and what’s happening in the space at the time. I’ll play songs from the new record and some from my last record.
Do you have any other upcoming shows you want to tell us about?
I’ve got quite a few festival shows being announced in the next few weeks, but nothing I can talk about yet. It’s looking like a tour in the Fall too.
