Having started as a classically trained pianist obsessed with west-coast hip hop, Toronto-based POLUN has unveiled his EP, Trillium, which leans more toward pop and is inspired he and his wife’s decade-long relationship, named after the place where he proposed to her and captured the essence of our journey with its highs and lows.
Previous singles, “Higher Ground,” “Today,” and “Takes Me Over,” have garnered over 400,000 streams on Spotify, with “Higher Ground” taking the lead, featuring fellow Canadian artist Gracie Ella.
“Love U Better” is the latest track to be released and features Atom Martin. The track layers electronic beats and synths, and catchy vocals, making it impossible not to dance along. The chorus, “I swear that if you let me, I’m gonna love u better, Promise you’ll never leaving, This time will be forever,” evokes a sense of vulnerability. I cannot get enough of this track. It’s an instant hit on every level in my books.
POLUN shares on “Love U Better,”
“It’s about how life is better with your significant other… I wanted to make a song about this realization and how you’ll do everything in your power to make sure they never leave you. Songs like this tend to be sad and slow, so I wanted to change the narrative and put a positive spin on it – because loving someone better should be a happy thing that’s celebrated!”
Closing out the EP, “Over Again” features Toronto-based artist Anthony Arthur and a catchy beat that immediately grabs the listener’s attention. The “Over Again” production is impressive, combining electronic music and pop elements. Anthony’s vocals on the release are strong yet soulful, and the chorus is highly infectious with its upbeat tempo. The lyrics, “I believed in the love, I gave everything up, And I know it’s like nothing I’ve seen, I believed in what was, All you did was give up, And I know it’s like nowhere I’ve been,” evoke a sense of urgency and intensity.
Overall, the seven-song release showcases POLUN’s songwriting and producing talents while introducing the listener to various Canadian artists. I’m positive we’ll be hearing much more from POLUN in the future, and I can’t wait.
