Pony Girl – Ottawa’s Ice Dragon Boat Performers – Interview

Pony Girl

The Ottawa/Hull-based band, Pony Girl, is set to perform at Ottawa’s Ice Dragon Boat Festival on February 16 at The Rainbow Bistro at 8:00 pm.

Listen to Enny One Wil Love You below and learn more about Pony Girl via our festival edition mini-interview.

First off, care to introduce yourself to the readers?

Hi, we’re Pony Girl, a 5-piece art-pop band from Ottawa-Hull.

None of us are from the same place (Ottawa, Hull, Nova Scotia, South Korea, and two of us lived in Europe for a while), so we feel intensely lucky to have found each other!
We started this project ten years ago and are more excited than ever to still be evolving and creating wild new stuff together.

Tell us a bit about your newest release.

Our latest album, Enny One Wil Love You, was released in October 2022. It’s our first release since signing with our new label, Paper Bag Records.

Each member of the group has a different musical background and interests, including classical, jazz, pop, folk, and electronic music. The album is the result of carefully adding all of these ingredients into a pot, slow-cooking them for a few years, then pairing it with a nice wine.

Is this your first time performing at the Ottawa Ice Dragon Boat Festival?

It’s not! Pony Girl played on the big summer stage at Dragonboat 2016 with Alvvays and Nap Eyes. Members of the group also played in 2018, backing up East Coast singer-songwriter Gianna Lauren.

What can people expect from your live performance?

Many songs from our most recent album Enny One Wil Love You, as well as some unreleased new material, with improvised jams sprinkled throughout the set. You can expect big drums, clarinet solos, dancing, and shredding.

What other bands/artists are you looking forward to checking out at the festival?

We’ve been big fans of The Peptides since their early years, having shared the stage with them a handful of times. Their show is always a good time.

Also looking forward to Moonfruits (they’re the sweetest), Twin Flames, and a shoutout to Emma Lamontagne (great voice)!
