Sala shares her latest single, “Nos Secrets,” in advance of sophomore album, Surface

Manitoba-based singer-songwriter Ariane Jean, aka Sala, has unveiled her single “Nos secrets,” leading into the release of her sophomore album Surface on April 14, 2023.

Among the finalists of the Festival international de la chanson de Granby, she is also the co-founder of the critically acclaimed and award-winning bands Madrigaïa and Chic Gamine. Ariane has shared Canadian and international stages with renowned artists like Marie-Pierre Arthur, Daniel Lavoie , and JP Hoe.

In 2020, Jean launched her solo career under the Sala moniker with the release of her eponymous debut EP. She is now about to unveil her second album, entitled Surface, on April 14th. The album weaves a gentle, unique, and almost melancholic web. All of Sala’s openness, softness, soul, and sophistication can be found in its tracks. Surface immerses us in trippy instrumentals alluding to the introspection of rainy afternoons and foggy mornings.

After releasing the first single, “Les pieds dans le béton,” on October 28th, Sala is back with a new track entitled “Nos secrets,” which sports soul and pop influences and highlights the project’s intimacy and nostalgia.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?

Salut! I am Sala, a francophone alternative-pop artist from Winnipeg. I’ve been lucky enough to make a career as a singer and professional music maker for over twenty years, and have had the chance to tour all over Canada and the U.S. as well as a little bit in Europe with my former Chic Gamine bandmates. A couple of years ago, I launched my first EP and solo French music project. I have really enjoyed developing my sound over the past few years, and I am currently preparing to release my second album in April. Although Sala is technically a solo project, I do have a killer band of three musicians accompanying me for my live shows and in the studio!

Tell us a bit about your most recent release.

I recently released a single called “Nos secrets.” I come from a line of expert secret keepers and very private people that literally took some of our family secrets to the grave. Nos secrets, a song I wrote with my dear friend Annick Brémault, was inspired by those things we may never know about ourselves…

Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?

My texts are usually inspired by my own experiences and observations as well as the experiences of people I am close to. I tend to spend quite a long time fleshing out my songs. Words don’t always come easy to me at the moment, so it’s nice to be able to take my time to make sure I find the right way to say what I am wanting to say.

Do you have any upcoming shows you’d like to tell us about?

I am planning a big album release show in Winnipeg on April 15th. I’ve never put on a concert quite like this and am very excited to be working with a team on creating a high-concept show that will include decor, costume, and light design. I’m having a great time building the show and can’t wait to share it with my hometown audience.

What’s your goal for 2023?

I haven’t had the chance to travel much with this project yet. My goal for 2023 is to start playing festivals and soft seaters across Canada in order to share my music with a broader audience.
