Miesha & The Spanks unveil “It’s My Year” and sign with Mint Records
Calgary-based Miesha & The Spanks have released another tantalizing banger from their forthcoming full-length album, Unconditional Love In Hi-Fi, out April 14, 2023, via their new home label, Mint Records. “It’s My Year” unveils a provocatively adventurous side of Miesha & The Spanks’ anthemic indie rock jams while breaking out the first scrappy-yet-danceable hit of 2023.
Recorded at the world-renowned National Music Centre in Calgary, Alberta, under the capable ears of producers Daniel Farrant (The Buzzcocks) and Paul Rawson, the new track casts a golden glow of optimism over the future along with its accompanying video directed by Sebastian Buzzalino and Miesha Louie.
Says Buzzalino,
“For this video, we set out to kick the year off in glittering style. We had to win over some ‘bored fans’ as a metaphor for leaving 2022 behind and heading into 2023 with full hearts and open optimism. As Miesha and Sean win over a small group of friends, we launch into resolutions and parties, manifesting a new year that is entirely ours.”
The guitar-and-drum garage rock duo of front woman-guitarist Miesha Louie and drummer Sean Hamilton smash through the subterfuge of self-doubt like a house of mirrors. A John Hughes movie comes to life, Miesha’s siren-to-banshee self-actualization manifests in an array of fervent guitar riffs to the backdrop of Sean Hamilton’s cardiac-arrest-reversing percussion.
Along with the album announcement, the band is excited to announce a signing to indie stalwart Mint Records.
“We first met Miesha & The Spanks when they were playing at Liverpool Sound City in April 2022,” says Mint Records’ Adrienne Labelle. “Though we’d been seeing the band name on multiple festival lineups and in the press, this was our first time seeing their live show, and it blew us away. We love their high-energy live set and the creative vision for their music. We’re excited to be teaming up to release their new album nearly one year later to the day. Miesha is a powerhouse, and it’s an honour to work alongside her. We couldn’t agree more with the first single’s title…it’s her year!”
Miesha Louie is a mixed-Secwépemc artist living in Treaty 7 Territory, and The Spanks are the many drummers who’ve stood beside her on stage. Sean Hamilton is her latest and longest partner, and together they’ve spent the last five years building and embellishing their garage-rock sound into something almost too big for two people to contain.
Deeply influenced by proto-punk classics like The Runaways, MC5, Stooges, and 90s riot grrrl/grunge like L7 and The Gits, Miesha & The Spanks conjure an energy that hits you in the face, throwing you into a world of killer riffs and sweaty gig venues. And it’s in those sweaty spaces that Miesha & The Spanks thrive, fresh off the highway, out of the van, and onto the stage.
Flourishing alongside alt-rock show ponies Wet Leg, Alvvays, Fleshwater, Black Mountain, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Miesha & The Spanks are set to shatter expectations in 2023. It’s a new era, and Joan Jett and Cyndi Lauper are the preeminent deities of divadom. The sparkling single “It’s My Year” pops the cork on endless possibilities with sassy, coquettish vocals and a decadent carpe diem vibe.
A first round of tour dates has been announced. Details on a Western Canada tour in April and Eastern Canada run in May to support the album will be announced in the coming weeks.
