Jackson Fairfax-Perry shares new single, “Kotal” in advance of upcoming album, TYNES
Jackson Fairfax-Perry, the stoic sonic spine of Halifax indie pop powerhouse Hillsburn announces TYNES – an instrumental hip-hop electronica project melding cinematic soundscapes, deep grooves, and jazz flourishes.
Acting as a preview to the upcoming self-titled TYNES debut, “Kotal” is a chilled-out tableau built around a dream-like piano loop, opening up into a brief chaotic 8-bit aside before returning to the track’s blissful motif.
Drawing on the influence of artists such as Kaytranada, Flying Lotus, and even Bon Iver, TYNES plays like the soundtrack to a midsummer party or perhaps something a bit darker—an impending breakup, a slow-mo walk to confrontation, a reunion, a long time coming.
The eight tracks comprising his self-titled debut have been meticulously stitched together over the past four years, in between Hillsburn records and theatrical sound designs. He composed, produced, and performed every note on the record—save the single two words that appear (“love me” on album closer “Ellie & Riley (Love Me)”), sampled from the voice of his bandmate and partner, Rosanna Burrill.
TYNES is available this spring on Friday, April 07, via LHM Records.
TYNES is the solo project of Jackson Fairfax-Perry, the stoic sonic spine of Hillsburn—that’s him in the centre of the synth-and-effects setup the band calls The Spaceship, nudging nuance and dynamic layers into the group’s high-octane, emotionally driven pop performances.
In that configuration, he’s one part of a four-piece stage production, but as TYNES, Jackson is the whole show. This music marks a shift towards hip hop and electronic for the artist, after years of working in more traditional composition settings and playing in an indie-pop band, a way to honour and celebrate his heritage as an African Nova Scotian (Tynes was his grandmother’s maiden name).
