Last night, American rock group Puscifer brought their Existential Reckoning Tour to Montreal’s Olympia!
The evening started with electronic band Night Club, on a dark stage occasionally lit up with blinding bursts of light (just like a nightclub, really). While electronic bands can have a rep for not being the most entertaining on stage, this was far from the case. Lead singer Emily Kavanaugh gave one hell of a set, jumping around the stage non-stop while Mark Brooks worked some sick beats. The opening set felt very intimate and moody, but with just the right amount of energy to get the crowd going!
Shortly around 9pm, two retro screens started playing a video of Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle) in a fake vintage ad for Spam. We knew right there and then we were in for a delightfully weird evening, just as Puscifer hit the stage. Accompanied by Carina Round, and musicians all dressed as special agents, Agent Dick Merkin (Maynard’s alter ego) interacted with the crowd early on, revealing that we were all there tonight to look for aliens. The evening was a perfect mix of funny gimmicks, stunning visuals, and great music. To add to the experience, audience members were not allowed to take a single phone picture or video at the risk of being thrown out. This was reinforced with posters all over the venue, announcements before the show, and reminders during their set. And while such a fun show concept would normally prompt fans to capture as many memories as possible, it was refreshing to see a show without a sea of cell phones!
Puscifer will be in Toronto tonight before heading back to the US. For tickets and more information, click here.
