Vicki Lovelee Blends Theatrical, Orchestral Sounds in New Alt-Pop Single “Guilty”
Chinese-Canadian alt-pop singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Vicki Lovelee has unveiled her latest single, “Guilty.”
The new track is about feeling guilty for walking away from someone. There were many times in Vicki’s life when she had to walk away from someone or stand up for herself because they were toxic, but she still felt really bad after doing that. They were in the wrong, yet she was the one left with the guilt.
This could apply to any relationship, whether it’s between friends, family members, or romantic interests. Writing this song was a reminder to Vicki that even though she may feel this way, she ultimately needs to do what’s best for herself.
“I love blending theatrical, orchestral elements to my pop sound,” explains Vicki. “That’s why I decided to start the song with a dramatic piano and violin intro. I was inspired by the dark drama that Phantom of the Opera has. The bridge of the song has an instrumental break with intense drum rhythms and vocal harmonies. I thought about how I’d perform this song and knew I wanted an instrumental dance break, where I’d freely dance on stage and intensely bop my head. Dancing to the bridge of the song symbolizes letting go of that guilt and negative energy, and realizing you need to let go of that toxic person.”

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey everyone! My name is Vicki Lovelee, and I’m a Chinese Canadian alt-pop artist from Toronto. My music blends theatrical and pop elements, ultimately creating a dark and dramatic sound. When I write music, I take painful experiences and turn them into music and empowerment. I write about topics such as mental health, heartbreak, and self-growth. I’m a huge advocate for mental health awareness and believe in the acceptance of all cultures and identities. Writing and creating music have helped me find myself and my place in the world. And I hope my songs can do the same for you – to give you a space of belonging.
Tell us a bit about your most recent release.
I just released my song called “Guilty.” The song is about feeling guilty for walking away from someone. You might still care about them, but you finally decide to put your happiness first. And sometimes, that means walking away from them. Writing this song reminded me that even though I feel this way, I still need to do what’s best for myself. And I hope this song gives you the strength to do the same.
Where do you tend to pull inspiration from when writing?
My songs always start with my own experiences and feelings. Once I decide what the song is about, I like to draw inspiration from what I see around me (what my friends are going through and what the world is going through). My songs are usually never about one specific situation but rather a blend of my own experiences mixed with other people’s experiences and a sprinkle of fiction to enhance the song’s story.
