Katy Topham is back with her new single, “Red Flags Green”
Kitchener, ON-based singer-songwriter Katy Topham has recently unveiled her latest single, “Red Flags Green.” The single follows her previous release, “The Hurtin’ and the Heart.” Both tracks are from her new EP, The Hurtin’ and the Heart, which was released on September 16, 2022.
Katy possesses not only a unique and distinctive singing voice but also an incredible talent for creating memorable and authentic songs. Katy’s live shows engage the crowd with an acoustic homey feel and pull in the attention of audiences who are looking for real, honest stories about life, love, and everything in between, with songs that tug at the heartstrings and make crowds laugh with her dry wit.
Katy performs locally and around Ontario, has performed at several festivals, and was among those selected out of hundreds of applicants for the CCMA Songwriters Showcase in 2012 and the Virtual Diamonds In The Rough Showcase in 2020. Katy recently performed in Calgary for the All Woman Music Bluejay Sessions over CCMA week 2022.

Care to introduce yourself to our readers?
Hey there friends! I’m Katy Topham! I’m a country/folk artist from Kitchener, Ontario, and I’ve just released my EP and a brand-new single!
Tell us a bit about your music and writing style.
If you take a listen to my most recent EP; “The Hurtin’ and the Heart,” you’ll hear seven songs about love and loss that I wrote over the course of 10 years (along with co-writers like Carrie DeMaeyer, Jamie Warren, Jessie T, and Duane Steele). Most of my writing tends to be autobiographical, or at least the stories I bring to the writing session always start that way. “based on a true story” should probably be written along the bottom of the album! Haha!
I try to share stories I think people will relate to. Writing is a cathartic tool for me, and it always has been. As I release more music over the next year, I think you’ll see the subject matter has changed a bit, focusing on my SELF rather than the other in the situation. There’s a metaphor there… related to getting older, I assume. ♥️
How did you keep creative during the Pandemic?
The pandemic has been a wild ride, I became a parent at the beginning! So that keeps me on my toes.
I’ve created so many new art pieces during this pandemic. I’ve released seven singles and many videos, the most recent being ‘Red Flags Green,’ which I wrote with Carrie DeMaeyer. I also worked with Canadian Daydream to create an amazing professional video for the song! Please check it out. It’s hilarious.
I also started playing with a band!! Which is incredibly exciting. My friends from “Homer Watson Boulevard” have been kind enough to start backing me up. So watch out for full-band shows in the future!!
If you were asked to suggest only one of your songs for someone to hear, which would it be?
Oh, that’s such a tough question right now. “Red Flags Green” – it’s my newest song-baby, and I can’t get over how fun the tune is. Some amazing musicians played on this one (J. Richard Hutt, Jamie Warren, Steve Hogg, Dave Hjin, and Shane Guse). My favourite thing about this song is how well all the instruments work together.
Canadian Beats is all about Canadian music, so who are your current favourite Canadian bands/artists?
I have a playlist I’ve created on Spotify called “Me & Mine,” and it’s music from people I know and call friends, who all happen to be Canadians! With artists like Nicole Rayy, Eric Bolton, Bernadette Connors, and Aaron Allen. Check it out!
